Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything

The detective connected his device to the television in the living room.

Everyone gathered around.

Even Richard.

Even Vanessa.

Especially Vanessa.

Because she knew.

Something was coming.

The screen remained black.

Then a voice appeared.

Vanessa’s voice.

“I’m tired of waiting.””

The room went completely silent.

The recording continued.

Another voice answered.

Richard.

“You need to be patient.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Patient? I’ve spent years pretending to be nothing while Elena gets everything.””

Alexander looked at Vanessa.

His expression was different now.

Not anger.

Disbelief.

Because he was finally hearing the truth without Vanessa controlling the story.

Richard’s recorded voice continued.

“Elena cannot remain in the family.””

Vanessa whispered.

“Then help me remove her.””

A sharp breath escaped Mrs. Howard.

Alexander looked at his father.

“No…”

But the recording continued.

Richard said:

“Make it look like she caused the problem herself.””

Vanessa replied:

“She won’t know what happened.””

The screen went dark.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than any argument.

Then Alexander turned toward Vanessa.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked away.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been planning this?””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

But this time, nobody believed them.

“Alexander, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I understand now.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I loved you.””

Elena almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was always Vanessa’s defense.

Love.

She used the word whenever she needed sympathy.

Richard had used power.

Vanessa had used affection.

Both were weapons.

“You never loved me,” Alexander said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re wrong.””

Elena finally spoke.

“Then why did you try to destroy my baby?””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for one second, her mask disappeared.

“You always had to be better.””

The words slipped out.

Everyone heard them.

Vanessa realized her mistake too late.

“You had Alexander. You had his trust. His child.””

Her voice became bitter.

“I had nothing.””

Elena stared at her.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You don’t get to tell me what my life was.””

“No,” Elena replied.

“But you don’t get to ruin mine because you hated yours.””

The room became still.

Detective Ruiz stepped forward.

“Vanessa Carter, you are being placed under arrest for attempted assault, conspiracy, and fraud.””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

“You’re letting this happen?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was when she understood.

She had no allies left.

As the officers approached, Vanessa suddenly smiled.

A strange, desperate smile.

Everyone noticed.

Elena especially.

“What?”” Elena asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“You think you won.””

Elena remained calm.

“I think the truth came out.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She leaned closer as the officers held her arms.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Alexander frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“Ask her.””

Elena felt a cold sensation move through her.

“Ask me what?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask her why she really married you.””

Alexander turned.

“Elena?””

The question hit harder than Elena expected.

Because she had spent months preparing for Vanessa’s attack.

She had prepared evidence.

Recordings.

Documents.

But she had not prepared for this.

Richard suddenly looked interested.

“Yes.””

His voice was quiet.

“Perhaps it is time Alexander learns.””

Elena looked at him.

“You don’t get to use my past to save yourself.””

Richard smiled.

“Maybe.””

He glanced at Alexander.

“But your husband deserves the truth.””

Alexander stared at Elena.

“What truth?””

The entire mansion waited.

Elena opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Detective Ruiz’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Elena asked.

Ruiz slowly lowered the phone.

“The hospital.””

Everyone froze.

“Why would the hospital call?””

Ruiz looked at Elena.

“They found another patient file connected to this family.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“What patient?””

The detective hesitated.

Then said:

“A woman who has been missing for twelve years.””

Elena’s face went pale.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who they were talking about.

Her mother.
