Chapter 2: The Woman Everyone Betrayed
Elena had learned something important during her marriage to Alexander Howard.
People rarely revealed who they were when everything was going well.
They revealed themselves when they believed they had already won.
And Vanessa believed she had won.
As the family gathered around the mansion’s living room, Vanessa sat beside Mrs. Howard, holding her hands and pretending to comfort everyone.
Elena remained upstairs in the guest bedroom.
The doctor had arrived earlier and confirmed that the baby was safe.
The fall had been frightening, but Elena’s careful preparation had protected her.
She had known Vanessa might try something.
She just never expected her to be so careless.
Alexander stood near the window, staring into the garden.
His shoulders were tense.
“Tell me exactly what happened,” he said.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I already told you.””
“I want to hear it again.””
She sighed.
“Elena came downstairs angry. She accused me of trying to steal your family away from her.””
Alexander looked confused.
“That doesn’t sound like Elena.””
Vanessa quickly looked at Mrs. Howard.
“See? This is what she does. She makes everyone believe she’s innocent.””
Mrs. Howard looked uncertain.
“She has always been quiet.””
“Quiet people can hide things too,” Vanessa replied.
Upstairs, Elena listened through the small device she had placed near the hallway.
She wasn’t proud of recording conversations.
But Vanessa had taught her something.
Trust without proof could be destroyed.
Two months earlier, Elena had discovered strange financial documents hidden inside Alexander’s office.
Payments.
Transfers.
Messages.
All connected to Vanessa.
At first, Elena believed there had to be an explanation.
She didn’t want to believe someone she knew could betray her.
So she investigated quietly.
And what she found was worse than she imagined.
Vanessa had been manipulating people for months.
She had edited messages.
Created misunderstandings.
Even convinced Alexander’s business partners that Elena was unstable.
But Elena didn’t confront her immediately.
She waited.
Because a liar will eventually create their own evidence.
And Vanessa had just done exactly that.
A knock came at the guest bedroom door.
“Elena?””
It was Alexander.
She quickly turned off the recording device.
“Come in.””
Alexander entered slowly.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
His eyes moved to her stomach.
“Are you okay?””
Elena looked away.
“I’m fine.””
“I was scared.””
She studied his face.
“Were you?””
Alexander looked hurt.
“Of course I was.””
Elena smiled sadly.
“Then why did you believe her?””
Silence.
The question hit harder than any accusation.
Alexander looked down.
“I didn’t know what to think.””
“You saw me lying on the floor.””
“Yes.””
“And your first reaction was to question me.””
His expression changed.
“Elena…”
“No,” she interrupted.
“You need to understand something. Vanessa didn’t just push me down those stairs.””
She reached for the folder beside the bed.
“She’s been trying to destroy me for months.””
Alexander stared at the papers.
“What is this?””
“Proof.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were printed messages, bank records, and photographs.
His face slowly changed.
“What am I looking at?””
“Everything Vanessa didn’t want you to see.””
Before Alexander could respond, the door suddenly opened.
Vanessa stood there.
Her expression changed when she saw the folder.
For the first time all night, she looked afraid.
“What are you doing with those?””
Elena watched her carefully.
“There it is.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
“The first honest reaction you’ve had all day.””
Alexander looked at Vanessa.
“Do you know what these documents are?””
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“They’re fake.””
Elena smiled.
“I knew you’d say that.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You’re trying to frame me.””
“No,” Elena said quietly.
“I’m letting you reveal yourself.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You think you’re clever?””
Elena looked toward the hallway camera.
“No.””
She paused.
“I think the truth is.””
Vanessa followed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked nervous.
Then she laughed.
“You really think a camera will save you?””
Elena didn’t answer.
Because Vanessa had just made another mistake.
She had admitted she knew about the cameras.
And Detective Ruiz had already confirmed something important.
One camera in the mansion had captured everything.
Not only the fall.
But what happened before it.
Elena watched Vanessa leave the room.
Then she turned to Alexander.
“Ask yourself one question.””
“What?””
“Why did Vanessa know exactly where the cameras were?””
Alexander said nothing.
Because now he was starting to see it.
The accident was not the beginning.
It was the ending of a plan Vanessa had been building for months.
And downstairs, as Vanessa entered the empty hallway, her phone suddenly rang.
She answered.
“What?””
A man’s voice whispered through the speaker.
“You need to leave the mansion tonight.””
Vanessa froze.
“Why?””
May you like
The voice became quieter.
“Because Elena wasn’t the only one recording.””
