Chapter 9: The Trap He Built for Me
I arrived at Rachel's office within twenty minutes.
The moment I walked in, I knew something was wrong.
She wasn't sitting behind her desk.
She was standing by the window with a file in her hand.
That was never a good sign.
"What happened?""
She turned around.
"Sit down.""
I sat.
Rachel placed the file in front of me.
"Open it.""
I did.
The first page was a bank document.
My name.
My signature.
A transfer.
I stared at it.
"I didn't sign this.""
Rachel nodded.
"I know.""
"Then why is my name on it?""
"Because someone copied your signature.""
The room became silent.
I looked through the pages.
Money transferred from a company account.
To an account connected to me.
Then transferred again.
Multiple times.
Making it appear like I was moving funds.
I felt sick.
"He was setting me up.""
Rachel nodded.
"Yes.""
"For what?""
"Fraud.""
The word landed heavily.
Julian wasn't just leaving me.
He was preparing to destroy me.
"He needed a person to blame.""
"And that person was me.""
Rachel didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
I looked at the documents.
The wedding.
The honeymoon.
The fake company.
The other woman.
Everything suddenly connected.
Julian never planned to simply walk away.
He planned to disappear cleanly.
Leaving me behind with the consequences.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Julian.
*We need to talk before this gets worse.*
I stared at it.
Before this gets worse.
As if he wasn't the reason it was happening.
I typed a response.
Then stopped.
I deleted it.
Rachel noticed.
"Don't answer.""
"I'm not.""
"Good.""
I looked at her.
"What do we do now?""
She closed the file.
"Now we let him believe he succeeded.""
I understood.
"Why?""
"Because people like Julian reveal themselves when they think they're safe.""
I looked out the window.
For three days, I had been reacting.
Crying.
Discovering.
Surviving.
But now?
Now I was done reacting.
I wanted him to think I was broken.
I wanted him to think I was confused.
I wanted him to think I was still the woman who believed every word he said.
Because that woman was gone.
That evening, I finally returned Julian's call.
He answered instantly.
"Clara.""
His voice was almost relieved.
"I was worried.""
I almost smiled.
"You were worried?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I don't know what you're planning.""
Interesting.
He was afraid.
Good.
"I want to meet.""
There was a pause.
"You do?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Tomorrow.""
His voice softened.
"Thank you.""
I closed my eyes.
He thought this was reconciliation.
He thought he was getting his wife back.
He had no idea.
"Julian?""
"Yes?""
"I want you to bring everything.""
"What?""
"All documents. All contracts. Everything related to the company.""
Silence.
"Why?""
"Because if we're going to fix this, I need the truth.""
Another pause.
Then:
"Okay.""
I ended the call.
Rachel looked at me.
"Are you ready?""
I nodded.
For the first time in days, I felt something besides pain.
Determination.
Tomorrow, I would sit across from the man who destroyed my life.
Tomorrow, I would let him believe he still had control.
Tomorrow, Julian Carter would learn the biggest mistake he ever made.
He underestimated the woman he betrayed.

And he was about to discover that losing me wasn't the end of my story.
It was the beginning of his downfall.
