Chapter 17: The Secret Julian Left Behind
The next morning, we found Julian.
Not physically.
But enough.
Marcus discovered a hidden server connected to the company.
A place where Julian stored files he thought nobody would ever find.
The password was simple.
Too simple.
Rachel almost laughed when she saw it.
"What?""
She turned the laptop toward me.
The password was:
*forever*
I stared at the screen.
Of all the words.
That one.
The same promise he broke first.
I typed it.
The folder opened.
Inside were years of information.
Plans.
Emails.
Financial records.
I expected to feel anger.
Instead, I felt something worse.
Confirmation.
Everything we suspected was true.
Julian had been planning this for years.
Not months.
Years.
Rachel opened the first document.
"This is a timeline.""
I read it.
The first entry was dated three years ago.
The year I met Julian.
The year he started pursuing me.
My stomach tightened.
The document described me.
Not by name.
By description.
"Target: daughter of primary investor.""
I stopped reading.
Target.
That word destroyed something inside me.
I wasn't a person.
I was a goal.
Rachel continued carefully.
"The plan involved gaining trust, marriage, access to family assets, and eventual transfer.""
I looked away.
Olivia covered her mouth.
"No.""
I whispered:
"He wrote this before we were even engaged.""
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing to say.
Then I found another document.
A message between Julian and Richard.
*Richard: She trusts you. Continue.*
*Julian: She will sign when the timing is right.*
*Richard: Do not become emotional. Remember the objective.*
I closed my eyes.
Become emotional.
They knew.
They knew I loved him.
They knew that was the weakness they were using.
Then I found something else.
A video file.
Recorded three months before my wedding.
I clicked it.
Julian appeared on screen.
Talking to Richard.
"I don't like this anymore.""
I froze.
Julian?
Richard answered:
"Don't forget why you're doing this.""
Julian looked uncomfortable.
"She's not what you said.""
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"She's kind.""
Silence.
For a moment, I wondered.
Had Julian changed?
Had he actually developed feelings?
Then Richard said:
"Kind people are easier to control.""
The video ended.
I sat there.
Because that was the most painful discovery of all.
Maybe Julian had felt something.
Maybe some part of him cared.
But he still chose betrayal.
And that choice mattered more.
Later that day, Julian finally contacted me.
Not by phone.
By email.
The message was short.
*You found the files.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
*I know you're angry.*
Another.
*But you don't understand everything.*
I almost smiled.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He still believed there was a version of the story where he was justified.
I replied.
*Then explain.*
The response came quickly.
*Meet me alone.*
I looked at Rachel.
She immediately shook her head.
"No.""
But I knew.
This was the moment.
"He's scared.""
"That's why it's dangerous.""
"I need to know what he says.""
Rachel looked at me.
"Clara.""
I understood her concern.
But I also understood Julian.
He wanted control.
And the only way to take control back was to face him.
"I'll record everything.""
Rachel hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Where?""
I looked at the message.
"Somewhere public.""
The meeting place was a quiet café.
Julian arrived looking nothing like the man from my wedding.
His suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were tired.
For once, he looked human.
But I reminded myself.
Looking broken didn't mean someone was innocent.
He sat down.
"Thank you for coming.""
I said nothing.
He looked at me.
"You know everything now.""
"Not everything.""
His face changed.
"What do you mean?""
"I know you were part of the plan.""
He looked down.
"I was.""
The honesty surprised me.
"Why admit it?""
"Because lying won't work anymore.""
I stared at him.
"Did you ever love me?""
The question came out quietly.
His face changed.
And for the first time, he looked truly hurt.
"Yes.""
I wanted to hate that answer.
But I believed he believed it.
"Then why?""
He swallowed.
"Because I was weak.""
I laughed softly.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were selfish.""
He nodded.
Maybe he deserved that.
"I tried to stop.""
"When?""
"Before the wedding.""
I looked at him.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
He looked away.
"Because I was already too far in.""
That sentence stayed with me.
Too far in.
Like he was trapped.
Like he wasn't the person making choices.
"Julian.""
He looked up.
"You had choices every day.""
Silence.
"You chose me when you needed me.""
A pause.
"You chose Sienna when she was useful.""
Another pause.
"You chose money over everything.""
His eyes filled slightly.
But I felt nothing.
Not anymore.
"I need to know one thing.""
"What?""
"Where is Richard?""
Julian looked at me.
And I knew from his expression.
The answer mattered.
"He's not running.""
"Then what is he doing?""
May you like
Julian whispered:
"He's coming for you.""
