Chapter 18: The Enemy Who Was Always Watching

I left the café with one thought repeating in my mind.

He's coming for you.

Not a warning.

Not a threat.

A promise.

Julian had looked afraid when he said it.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Julian was many things.

A liar.

A manipulator.

A coward.

But he wasn't easily frightened.

If Richard Brooks scared him...

I needed to understand why.

Rachel reviewed the recording immediately.

We listened carefully.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every hesitation.

"He admitted involvement," Rachel said.

"Yes.""

"He also admitted Richard is still active.""

I nodded.

"But he didn't tell us where Richard is.""

"No.""

"Because he's protecting him?""

I thought about Julian's face.

"No.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Then why?""

"Because he's afraid of him.""

That changed everything.

Julian wasn't the mastermind.

He was a participant who had lost control.

And people like that were dangerous.

Especially when they had nothing left.

That evening, an unexpected person arrived.

Sienna.

But she wasn't alone.

She brought someone.

A woman in her sixties.

Elegant.

Quiet.

I immediately recognized her.

"Mrs. Brooks?""

Sienna nodded.

"My mother.""

I looked at Sienna.

"Why is she here?""

Her mother spoke softly.

"Because I know what my husband is planning.""

Everyone became silent.

Rachel stepped forward.

"What do you know?""

Mrs. Brooks looked at me.

"Richard doesn't want money anymore.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then what does he want?""

She answered:

"Revenge.""

The word settled over the room.

"Against my father?""

"Against everyone who destroyed him.""

I frowned.

"But my father exposed his fraud.""

She nodded.

"And Richard believes your father ruined his life.""

I looked at Sienna.

"What about Julian?""

Mrs. Brooks looked down.

"Julian was never the final goal.""

The room went cold.

"Then who was?""

She looked at me.

"You.""

I felt the answer before she said it.

"Why me?""

"Because Richard believes the people who hurt him should lose what they love most.""

My breath caught.

"My family?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"Your future.""

The word terrified me.

Because I finally understood.

This was never only about money.

Richard wanted to destroy the next generation.

My marriage.

My reputation.

My security.

Everything.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I sat by the window watching the city.

A city full of people who had no idea how easily lives could collapse.

I thought about the girl I was before all this.

The woman who believed love was enough.

The woman who thought honesty was normal.

The woman who believed people meant what they said.

I missed her.

But I also knew something.

She would never have survived this.

The person I became could.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

*You finally understand.*

My heart stopped.

Another message followed.

*Your husband was only the beginning.*

Then a photo.

A picture of me.

Leaving Rachel's office.

Taken from across the street.

My blood ran cold.

He had been watching.

Not Julian.

Richard.

I showed Rachel.

Her expression changed immediately.

"We need to move.""

"What?""

"Now.""

"Why?""

She looked at the photo.

"Because he wants you to know he's close.""

I grabbed my bag.

As we left, I looked back at the apartment.

The place where I had spent days believing I was finally safe.

I realized something.

I wasn't fighting to save my marriage anymore.

I wasn't fighting to prove Julian was wrong.

I was fighting for my life.

And Richard Brooks had just made his biggest mistake.

He thought fear would make me surrender.

He didn't know what betrayal had already taught me.

May you like

I had already lost everything.

And someone who had nothing left to lose was the most dangerous person in the room.
