Chapter 10: The Conversation He Thought He Could Control
Julian arrived twenty minutes early.
That alone told me everything.
The man who always made me wait.
The man who treated my time like something flexible.
The man who believed I would always be there.
Was now sitting alone in a private room, checking the door every few seconds.
He was nervous.
Good.
I stood outside the restaurant for a moment, watching him through the glass.
A stranger might have seen a successful businessman.
Perfect suit.
Expensive watch.
Confident posture.
But I didn't see that anymore.
I saw a man who built an entire illusion and believed he was clever enough to control everyone inside it.
I saw the man who kissed my forehead the morning after our wedding and then boarded a plane with another woman.
I saw the man who looked at my pain and called it an overreaction.
I took a deep breath.
Then I walked inside.
The moment Julian saw me, he stood.
"Clara.""
His voice was softer than usual.
Almost gentle.
That would have worked before.
Before I knew how carefully he chose his words.
Before I knew every apology came with a purpose.
"Hi, Julian.""
He looked at me for a long moment.
Something changed in his expression.
Maybe he expected tears.
Maybe he expected anger.
Maybe he expected the woman who loved him to appear again.
She didn't.
I sat down.
He followed.
"I've missed you.""
I almost looked around to see if he was speaking to someone else.
"You've missed me?""
"Yes.""
"That's interesting.""
His face tightened.
"Clara, I know you're hurt.""
"Hurt isn't the right word.""
"What is?""
I looked directly at him.
"Betrayed.""
For a second, his confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
Then he recovered.
"I made mistakes.""
There it was again.
Mistakes.
Not decisions.
Not plans.
Mistakes.
"You keep saying that.""
"Because it's true.""
"No, Julian.""
I leaned forward.
"You made choices. Mistakes happen accidentally. You planned everything.""
His eyes shifted.
A small movement.
But I noticed.
"You don't understand the pressure I was under.""
I smiled.
"I've heard that before.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means everyone has an excuse.""
His jaw tightened.
"I was trying to protect my company.""
"By lying to me?""
"By protecting our future.""
"Our future?""
I almost laughed.
"You planned a future with Sienna.""
His expression changed.
Fear.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But real.
"I don't know what she told you.""
"She didn't need to tell me much.""
"Clara—"
"I saw the agreement.""
The room went silent.
Julian froze.
"What agreement?""
"The one you created with her.""
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he leaned back.
"You went through my private documents?""
I stared at him.
That was his concern?
Not the document.
Not the betrayal.
Privacy.
"You wrote a second life while promising me forever.""
"That isn't what it was.""
"Then what was it?""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched him struggle.
For years, I had thought Julian was impossible to defeat because he always had an answer.
But I finally understood something.
He wasn't intelligent because he knew the truth.
He was convincing because nobody challenged his lies.
"I never wanted to hurt you.""
I looked down.
A sad smile appeared.
"You keep saying that.""
"Because it's true.""
"No.""
I looked back at him.
"You wanted to avoid consequences. That's different.""
He looked away.
And that was when I knew.
I had finally reached the real Julian.
Not the charming husband.
Not the successful businessman.
The man behind everything.
"What happened in Hawaii?"" I asked.
His eyes returned to mine.
"What?""
"You left Sienna.""
Silence.
A longer one.
"I heard.""
"She wasn't supposed to contact you.""
"Why?""
"Because she doesn't understand.""
I almost laughed.
"She understood enough to help you.""
Julian rubbed his face.
"Clara, listen to me. Sienna was a mistake.""
I stared at him.
"A mistake?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you buy her an apartment?""
No answer.
"Why did you create documents about leaving me?""
No answer.
"Why did you move money through accounts connected to me?""
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because that was the question he feared.
"Where did you hear that?""
I smiled.
There it was.
The truth.
Not denial.
Not outrage.
Fear.
"You don't get to ask questions anymore.""
His expression hardened.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"Actually, I do.""
"Clara.""
"No, Julian. You need to understand something.""
I placed my hands on the table.
"I spent three years loving you. Three years trusting you. Three years believing every excuse you gave me.""
His eyes softened.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
Then I remembered.
"He thought I was emotional. You thought I would forgive anything.""
I shook my head.
"But you were wrong.""
He stared at me.
"What do you want?""
The question surprised me.
Not because he asked.
Because he finally asked the right question.
I smiled.
"The truth.""
"You have the truth.""
"No.""
I looked at the folder beside me.
"I have pieces.""
I pushed it toward him.
"Now I want everything.""
He didn't touch it.
"What happens if I don't?""
I held his gaze.
"Then everyone finds out.""
His face went pale.
"Clara, don't threaten me.""
"I'm not threatening you.""
I stood.
"I'm warning you.""
May you like
I left him sitting there.
For the first time since I met him, Julian Carter looked powerless.
