Chapter 6: The Wife He Never Expected
Three days after I left the airport, Julian finally came home.
Not because he was sorry.
Because he realized something was wrong.
Rachel had warned me not to return.
But I didn't need to.
I was waiting somewhere else.
Watching.
Learning.
Julian arrived at our apartment in Manhattan at 7:15 p.m.
I knew because the building security notified me.
The apartment was still in my name too.
A detail Julian had forgotten.
He entered alone.
No Sienna.
No confidence.
No smile.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time, he looked like a man who understood he had lost control.
But I wasn't there to comfort him.
I was across town with Rachel.
Reviewing the final documents.
"Clara," Rachel said carefully, "once we do this, there's no going back.""
I looked at the paperwork.
The evidence.
The messages.
The signatures.
Everything.
"I know.""
"Are you sure?""
I thought about yesterday.
The airport.
The vows.
The woman I was before all this.
Then I thought about Julian telling another woman she would eventually replace me.
"I've never been more sure.""
Rachel nodded.
"Then we move forward.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Julian.
*Please come home. We need to talk.*
I stared at it.
Then another.
*I made mistakes. But I never stopped loving you.*
A year ago, those words would have destroyed me.
Today, they meant nothing.
Because love without respect was just a promise someone made when it was convenient.
I didn't answer.
Instead, I sent one message.
*Check your email.*
Then I placed my phone on the table.
Five minutes later, it rang.
Julian.
I watched it light up.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I ignored it.
Then Rachel's phone rang.
She answered.
"Yes?""
Her expression changed.
She put the call on speaker.
Julian's voice filled the room.
"What did you send her?""
Rachel remained calm.
"Mr. Carter, I believe you know exactly what was sent.""
"You don't understand.""
"No," Rachel replied.
"I understand perfectly.""
His voice became angry.
"Clara doesn't know what she's doing.""
I looked at Rachel.
She didn't react.
"Actually," Rachel said, "Clara knows exactly what she's doing.""
Silence.
Then:
"Where is she?""
I stood up.
Rachel looked at me.
"Do you want to answer?""
I shook my head.
Not yet.
There was something powerful about silence.
Julian had spent months controlling the story.
Now he was forced to sit with uncertainty.
The same uncertainty he gave me.
After the call ended, I finally looked at my phone.
There were twenty-seven messages.
From Julian.
From Sienna.
From Marcus.
Everyone suddenly wanted my attention.
Funny how quickly people cared when they realized they could no longer ignore you.
The next morning, Rachel filed the first legal documents.
The process had begun.
But before I could feel relief, Marcus sent me something.
One sentence.
*Clara, there is one more thing you need to know about Sienna.*
Attached was a photo.
I opened it.
And my entire world shifted again.
Because standing beside Sienna wasn't Julian.
It wasn't Marcus.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
May you like
Someone who had smiled at me yesterday while knowing exactly what was happening.
My father.
