Chapter 19: The Truth Hidden Beneath My Father’s Name
The first thing Rachel did was move me somewhere nobody knew.
Not my apartment.
Not Olivia's place.
Not my father's house.
A small private residence owned by one of Rachel's longtime clients became my temporary home.
It wasn't luxurious.
It wasn't comfortable.
But for the first time in days, I slept without wondering if someone was watching me through a window.
Almost.
Because fear had changed me.
Before all of this, I never thought about security cameras.
I never checked unfamiliar cars.
I never questioned strangers standing too close.
Now every shadow felt like a warning.
Every unknown number felt like a threat.
Every quiet moment felt temporary.
Rachel noticed.
"You haven't slept.""
I looked away from the window.
"I'm fine.""
She gave me a look.
The same look Olivia always gave me when she knew I was lying.
"Clara.""
I sighed.
"I'm trying.""
"I know.""
She softened.
"But you don't have to pretend you're okay.""
That was the strange thing about Rachel.
She wasn't my oldest friend.
She wasn't family.
But through all of this, she became one of the few people who saw me clearly.
Not as a wife.
Not as someone's daughter.
Not as a person who needed protection.
Just as me.
"I keep thinking about how long this was happening.""
Rachel sat across from me.
"What do you mean?""
"How long they were planning.""
I looked down.
"How many times did Julian look at me and know?""
The question hurt.
Because there was no answer that made it better.
"He smiled at me while knowing.""
Rachel stayed quiet.
"He held my hand while knowing.""
My voice cracked.
"He said forever while planning how to destroy me.""
I covered my face.
"I don't understand how someone can do that.""
Rachel didn't offer a simple answer.
She didn't say people were complicated.
She didn't say everyone made mistakes.
She just said:
"Some people separate love from ambition.""
I looked at her.
"They convince themselves they're still good because they feel something.""
She paused.
"But what people do matters more than what they feel.""
That sentence stayed with me.
Because maybe Julian did love me.
Maybe some part of him did.
But love without loyalty was just another excuse.
The next morning, my father arrived.
Rachel wanted to refuse him entry.
I didn't.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed answers.
He looked exhausted.
Not like a powerful businessman.
Not like the man who once commanded every room he entered.
Just my father.
A man who had made choices he couldn't undo.
"I found something.""
He placed a folder on the table.
I didn't touch it.
"What is it?""
"Proof.""
"Of what?""
His eyes met mine.
"That Richard has been planning this longer than we knew.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were old business records.
Emails.
Financial reports.
And one name repeated over and over.
Richard Brooks.
"Where did you get these?""
"My old files.""
I looked up.
"You kept them?""
"I never stopped investigating him.""
That surprised me.
"Why?""
My father looked away.
"Because I knew he would come back.""
The answer bothered me.
"You knew?""
He nodded.
"I always knew Richard didn't forget.""
I stared at him.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
The pain crossed his face.
"Because I wanted you to have a normal life.""
I almost laughed.
"Normal?""
I held up the documents.
"This is your idea of normal?""
"No.""
His voice broke.
"It was my mistake.""
I waited.
And this time, he continued.
No excuses.
No defense.
"When Richard disappeared, I thought it was over.""
"But it wasn't.""
"No.""
He looked at the papers.
"Years later, Julian appeared.""
I already knew.
But I wanted to hear it from him.
"Richard sent him.""
My father nodded.
The room became silent.
My entire marriage reduced to one sentence.
Richard sent him.
"Why me?""
My father looked devastated.
"Because you were the only person who could connect us.""
"Connect you?""
"Your marriage gave Julian access to everything.""
My heart sank.
"My family.""
"Yes.""
"Your reputation.""
"Yes.""
"Your money.""
He nodded.
"And your trust.""
That last one hurt most.
Because it was true.
My trust was the most valuable thing I gave him.
And the easiest thing to steal.
Later that afternoon, Marcus found something.
Something that changed everything.
He called while Rachel and I were reviewing the documents.
"I found the original company structure.""
Rachel immediately answered.
"Where?""
"Buried in old registration files.""
"What did you find?""
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
"Julian didn't own the company.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"He was listed as the CEO.""
"Then who owned it?""
Silence.
Then:
"Richard Brooks.""
I felt cold.
"So Julian was never running the operation.""
"No.""
Marcus continued.
"He was the public face.""
The charming businessman.
The perfect husband.
The successful entrepreneur.
All an act.
"What about the money?""
"Most of it moved through shell companies connected to Richard.""
Rachel looked at me.
"The wedding.""
I understood.
"The wedding was a distraction.""
Marcus confirmed it.
"Exactly.""
While everyone watched the beautiful bride and groom, money was moving behind the scenes.
While people celebrated love, someone was preparing theft.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Julian.
I almost ignored it.
But I opened it.
*I know the truth is coming out.*
Another message followed.
*You deserve to know what happened.*
I stared.
For the first time, Julian wasn't trying to manipulate me.
Or maybe this was just another strategy.
I didn't know anymore.
Then:
*Richard will kill everyone involved before he lets himself lose.*
My hands tightened around the phone.
Rachel saw my face.
"What did he say?""
I showed her.
She became serious.
"Maybe he's finally telling the truth.""
"Or maybe he's trying to save himself.""
"Both can be true.""
She was right.
And that was the hardest part.
People could be guilty and afraid.
They could hurt you and still fear something worse.
That night, I made a decision.
I called Julian.
He answered immediately.
"Clara.""
His voice sounded surprised.
"You called me.""
"Yes.""
Silence.
"I need information.""
"What kind?""
"The truth.""
A long pause.
"About Richard?""
"Yes.""
Julian exhaled.
"I'll tell you everything.""
"Why?""
Another pause.
Then he said:
"Because I finally understand something.""
"What?""
"I thought I was using him.""
His voice became quieter.
"But he was using me.""
For the first time, Julian sounded like the person I met years ago.
Not the liar.
Not the planner.
Just a man realizing too late that he had made a deal with someone worse than himself.
"Meet me tomorrow.""
I hesitated.
"Where?""
"A place with cameras.""
A bitter smile appeared.
Even Julian understood now.
Trust was gone.
"Tomorrow.""
I ended the call.
And for the first time since the airport, I wondered if Julian Carter might not be my greatest enemy anymore.
Maybe he was just another person trapped inside Richard Brooks' game.
May you like
But that didn't mean I forgave him.
It only meant I finally understood the size of the enemy standing in front of me.
