Chapter 14: The Document That Could Have Destroyed Me

The next morning, Rachel arrived with the same question written across her face.

"What did you find?""

I handed her the phone.

She spent twenty minutes reading.

Not speaking.

Not reacting.

Just reading.

When she finally looked up, her expression was serious.

"This is bigger than I thought.""

"What is it?""

"Julian wasn't planning to leave after taking the money.""

"Then what?""

"He was planning to transfer everything.""

I frowned.

"Everything?""

Rachel nodded.

"Assets. Accounts. Company ownership.""

My stomach tightened.

"And me?""

She looked at me.

"Your signature was the final step.""

I felt cold.

"What exactly was I supposed to sign?""

Rachel searched through the files.

Then she found it.

A document.

A transfer agreement.

I read the title.

My name was on it.

But not as an owner.

As a responsible party.

My hands went numb.

"He wanted me to take responsibility.""

"Yes.""

"For everything.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the signature line.

The place where I would have signed.

The place where I almost destroyed my own life.

Because I trusted my husband.

Because I believed his words.

Because I never imagined love could be used as a weapon.

"He was going to ask me to sign this after the honeymoon.""

Rachel nodded.

"Probably.""

I laughed quietly.

"He brought Sienna because he thought I would be too emotional to notice.""

"Yes.""

"He thought heartbreak would make me careless.""

"Yes.""

I stared at the document.

The worst part wasn't that Julian wanted to hurt me.

It was that he understood me enough to know exactly how to do it.

Or at least he thought he did.

Later that afternoon, Julian requested a meeting.

Rachel didn't want me to go.

"I don't trust him.""

"I don't either.""

"Then why?""

I looked at the phone.

"Because he needs to think he still has control.""

She sighed.

"Be careful.""

"I will.""

This time, I wasn't walking into the meeting as Julian's wife.

I was walking in as someone who knew the truth.

We met in his office.

The same office where he had built his empire.

Or the illusion of one.

He stood when I entered.

"Clara.""

I looked around.

Nothing felt familiar anymore.

"Julian.""

He studied me.

"You look different.""

"I am.""

He forced a smile.

"I know you're angry.""

"I'm not here to discuss my emotions.""

That surprised him.

"I want to fix this.""

"No.""

The word was simple.

Final.

His expression changed.

"You don't mean that.""

"I do.""

"Clara, think carefully.""

"I have.""

He walked closer.

"We built a life together.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"I built a life. You built a strategy.""

His face hardened.

"You really believe that?""

"I know that.""

For a moment, anger flashed across his face.

Then it disappeared.

The mask returned.

"I can explain everything.""

"Then explain.""

He stopped.

Because he knew.

The truth was impossible.

"I made decisions under pressure.""

"Again.""

"You don't understand.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I understand perfectly.""

He looked at me.

"You want revenge.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"What then?""

"Accountability.""

That word bothered him.

Because people like Julian feared accountability more than anger.

Anger could disappear.

Accountability remained.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

I smiled.

"That's what you keep telling yourself.""

He stared at me.

Then lowered his voice.

"Clara, if you continue this, people will get hurt.""

I felt my entire body go cold.

A threat.

Finally.

The real Julian appeared.

"Are you threatening me?""

"No.""

His eyes narrowed.

"I'm warning you.""

I picked up my bag.

"That's interesting.""

"What?""

"Because that's exactly what you said before.""

He looked confused.

I smiled.

"Except now I'm not the person who should be afraid.""

I walked out.

But before I reached the door, he said:

"Clara.""

I stopped.

"I did love you.""

For a second...

Just one second...

The old pain returned.

Then I remembered the airport.

The suitcase.

The other woman.

The documents.

I turned around.

"Maybe you did.""

His face softened.

May you like

"But love doesn't excuse what you did.""

And then I left.
