Chapter 3: The Secret He Thought I Would Never Find

Julian called twelve times.

I counted every one.

Not because I cared.

Because I wanted to remember.

Every missed call was proof.

Every message was proof.

Every attempt to control the situation was proof.

By the time I arrived at Olivia's apartment, I had already made a decision.

I wasn't going to expose Julian publicly.

Not yet.

I wasn't going to scream.

Not yet.

I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing me fall apart.

I was going to let him believe he was winning.

That was the mistake people made when they underestimated someone.

They stopped protecting themselves.

Olivia opened the door before I knocked.

The moment she saw my face, she pulled me into a hug.

For a few seconds, I allowed myself to break.

Just a little.

"I feel stupid," I whispered.

Olivia stepped back.

"Never say that.""

"But I married him.""

"You trusted someone you loved. That doesn't make you stupid.""

I looked away.

"Maybe I ignored signs.""

Olivia didn't argue.

Because she knew I wasn't looking for comfort.

I was looking for honesty.

"There were signs," I admitted.

"What signs?""

I sat down.

"Julian became secretive six months ago. He changed passwords. He started traveling more. He said it was because his company was growing.""

"And you believed him.""

"Yes.""

"Because you loved him.""

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

Love had made me generous.

But Julian had mistaken my kindness for weakness.

That night, Rachel sent over the first report.

The information was worse than I expected.

Julian had been moving money around for months.

But there was something else.

A property purchase.

A luxury apartment in downtown Manhattan.

The buyer wasn't Julian.

It wasn't our company.

It was a private trust.

A trust connected to Sienna.

I stared at the document.

My hands went numb.

The apartment wasn't just an affair.

It was a plan.

He had been building a second life.

While I was choosing flowers.

While I was writing vows.

While I was dreaming about our honeymoon.

He was preparing an escape.

I read the documents again.

Then I noticed the date.

The apartment purchase was finalized three weeks before our wedding.

Three weeks.

I remembered that time.

Julian had been unusually affectionate.

He brought me flowers every morning.

He planned romantic dinners.

He told me he had never been happier.

I thought he was becoming a better husband.

I didn't know he was saying goodbye.

My phone suddenly rang.

Julian.

I looked at Olivia.

She shook her head.

"Don't answer.""

But I did.

I wanted to hear his voice.

"Clara.""

His tone was careful.

Too careful.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere safe.""

A pause.

"You need to stop this.""

I almost smiled.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not concern.

An order.

"Stop what?""

"Making assumptions.""

"Julian, you brought another woman on our honeymoon.""

"Because of work.""

"And you transferred money to her.""

Silence.

Real silence.

The kind that reveals everything.

When he finally spoke, his voice changed.

"How did you find that?""

I closed my eyes.

That question was the answer.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"You don't get to ask me that.""

"Clara, listen to me.""

"No. You listen.""

My voice was calm.

And that seemed to surprise him.

"Yesterday, you promised me forever.""

"Clara—"

"Today, I found out you were building a life with someone else.""

"You're misunderstanding.""

"No.""

I looked at the documents on the table.

"I understand perfectly.""

His breathing became heavier.

"You don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell me.""

He didn't.

That was the moment I knew.

There was no explanation.

No misunderstanding.

No innocent reason.

Only secrets.

Finally, he whispered:

"Where are you staying?""

I smiled sadly.

"Why?""

"Because we need to talk face-to-face.""

"No, Julian.""

I looked at my wedding ring.

Then slowly removed it.

"You need to talk.""

A pause.

"I need to decide.""

Before he could answer, I ended the call.

Outside Olivia's window, the city continued moving.

Cars passed.

People walked.

Life continued.

My marriage had collapsed in less than twenty-four hours.

But something else had started.

May you like

The truth.

And Julian had no idea that the woman he thought he abandoned was about to become the one person he could never control again.
