Chapter 16: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return

For the first time in days, I wasn't afraid.

Not because the situation had become safer.

It hadn't.

If anything, it had become more dangerous.

Julian was gone.

Richard Brooks had appeared.

And Sienna, the woman I once believed was my enemy, was now running from the same people who had used me.

But fear had changed.

Before, I was afraid because I didn't understand what was happening.

Now, I was afraid because I finally did.

The truth was much bigger than my broken marriage.

This wasn't a story about a husband cheating on his wife.

It was a story about manipulation.

Money.

Identity.

And people who believed they could erase the consequences of their actions.

Rachel spent the entire night reviewing the information Sienna gave us.

By sunrise, her office looked like a war room.

Documents covered the table.

Photos.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Names connected by lines.

At the center of everything was one person.

Richard Brooks.

"The timing is important," Rachel said.

I looked up.

"What timing?""

"Richard disappeared seven years ago after the fraud investigation.""

"And now he's back.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Rachel tapped a file.

"Because Julian was never the only person benefiting.""

I stared at the documents.

"So Richard was behind this?""

"We don't know.""

"But?""

She sighed.

"But the evidence suggests he had influence.""

I looked at the names.

Julian.

Sienna.

Richard.

My father.

Everyone connected.

Everyone hiding something.

"Why Sienna?"" I asked.

Rachel looked at me.

"What do you mean?""

"If Richard was planning something, why involve his daughter?""

"Because she was close to Julian.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Rachel waited.

I continued.

"Sienna wasn't just close to Julian. She believed him.""

That was the part nobody understood.

Everyone thought Sienna was simply the other woman.

But she was also manipulated.

Julian had created different versions of himself for everyone.

To me, he was the devoted husband.

To Sienna, he was the trapped businessman.

To investors, he was the ambitious entrepreneur.

To my father, he was the promising son-in-law.

But underneath all of it was the same person.

A man who saw people as tools.

That afternoon, Sienna agreed to meet again.

This time, she looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Not confident.

Terrified.

She sat across from me and immediately said:

"I need protection.""

I studied her.

"From who?""

She looked around.

"My father.""

The answer surprised me.

"Why?""

"Because I know what he does when people become problems.""

I remained silent.

Sienna lowered her voice.

"Clara, you don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She looked at her hands.

"My father doesn't lose.""

A chill moved through me.

"Everyone loses eventually.""

"Not him.""

She looked up.

"He changes the rules.""

I remembered what Rachel said.

A new identity.

A disappearance.

"What exactly is he planning?""

Sienna hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I took this before I left.""

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

The first one showed Richard Brooks and Julian.

They looked younger.

The second showed them together again.

The third made me freeze.

It was my father.

Not with Julian.

With Richard.

Years ago.

I looked at Sienna.

"They knew each other.""

She nodded.

"Before any of this started.""

My mind raced.

"How?""

"My father and your father worked together.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"They were business partners.""

I felt a strange sense of betrayal.

Another hidden connection.

Another secret.

Sienna continued.

"Then something happened.""

"What?""

"My father lost everything.""

"And blamed my father?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The pieces shifted.

This wasn't random.

The marriage.

The investment.

The company.

Maybe Julian wasn't chosen because he loved me.

Maybe he was chosen because he was the perfect bridge.

Between families.

Between money.

Between old enemies.

"Why marry me?""

The question left my mouth before I could stop it.

Sienna looked at me sadly.

"Because your father trusted him.""

I closed my eyes.

That answer hurt.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it confirmed my worst fear.

I wasn't chosen because I was loved.

I was chosen because I was useful.

That evening, my father came to Rachel's office.

He looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the truth had finally exhausted him.

"I need to tell you everything.""

I looked at him.

"Everything this time?""

He nodded.

"Everything.""

We sat down.

For the first time, my father stopped defending himself.

"I met Richard Brooks twenty years ago.""

I listened.

"He was brilliant. Charming. Everyone trusted him.""

"Like Julian.""

My father nodded sadly.

"Exactly like Julian.""

He explained that Richard had once been considered a financial genius.

Until investors discovered missing funds.

The company collapsed.

People lost money.

Families lost everything.

"My father was one of the people who exposed him.""

"And Richard never forgave him.""

"No.""

My father looked at me.

"Years later, Julian appeared.""

I felt cold.

"What do you mean?""

"Richard introduced him.""

The room went silent.

"Richard introduced Julian to our family?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

My father looked away.

"I didn't know at the time.""

"But now?""

"Now I think Julian was chosen.""

Chosen.

The word stayed with me.

Not loved.

Not lucky.

Chosen.

As part of a plan.

That night, I returned to Olivia's apartment.

I was exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She opened the door and immediately knew.

"What happened?""

I dropped my bag.

"My marriage was never just a marriage.""

She frowned.

"What does that mean?""

I looked at her.

"It was a business deal.""

She hugged me.

And for the first time in days, I allowed myself to cry.

Not because I wanted Julian back.

Not because I regretted leaving.

May you like

Because I was mourning the person I thought I married.

The person who never existed.
