Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Perfect Marriage
The hardest part about betrayal wasn't discovering the truth.
It was realizing how long the truth had been standing right in front of me.
For months, maybe even longer, Julian had been living two lives.
One with me.
One without me.
And the cruelest part was that I had been so focused on building our future that I never considered he might be building a future that excluded me.
I spent the night at Olivia's apartment staring at the ceiling.
Sleep never came.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the airport.
Julian's expression.
Sienna's confidence.
The way she stood there beside him like she had already won.
That image kept replaying in my mind.
But as painful as it was, something else bothered me more.
She wasn't surprised.
She knew.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
At six in the morning, I got out of bed.
Olivia was asleep on the couch because she had refused to leave me alone.
That was Olivia.
She could be stubborn, dramatic, and impossible, but when it mattered, she was the kind of person who showed up.
I covered her with a blanket and went into the kitchen.
I made coffee.
Then I opened my laptop.
The old version of me would have spent the morning crying.
The old version of me would have searched Julian's social media, wondering if there were signs I missed.
The old version of me would have blamed herself.
But I wasn't that woman anymore.
I had one goal.
Find everything.
I started with Sienna.
Her online profile looked exactly like I expected.
Professional.
Elegant.
Carefully created.
She had worked for Julian's company for four years.
Her public posts showed a woman who loved luxury restaurants, expensive hotels, and exclusive events.
Nothing unusual.
Until I looked closer.
There were pictures from places I remembered.
Restaurants Julian had taken me to.
Hotels where he claimed he had business meetings.
Events where he said spouses weren't invited.
My stomach tightened.
One picture caught my attention.
Sienna standing in front of a famous New York restaurant.
The caption said:
"Some moments are worth waiting for.""
The date was eight months ago.
That was the same week Julian told me he was too busy to celebrate our anniversary.
I stared at the screen.
Eight months.
Not a mistake.
Not a recent temptation.
A pattern.
I continued searching.
Then I found something that made me stop breathing.
A tagged photo.
Not posted by Sienna.
Posted by someone else.
A woman named Vanessa.
The picture showed a group of people at a private party.
Julian was there.
Sienna was there.
And in the background was a man I recognized.
Julian's business partner, Marcus.
The caption read:
"Celebrating new beginnings.""
I zoomed in.
The date was two months before my wedding.
New beginnings.
The phrase suddenly felt like a threat.
I saved everything.
Then I searched Marcus.
Unlike Julian, Marcus was careless online.
He posted about everything.
Business deals.
Trips.
Private events.
And then I found it.
A conversation screenshot from a business networking event.
Someone had tagged Marcus in a post where he mentioned:
"Excited for the next chapter. The expansion will change everything.""
Expansion.
That word again.
The same word Julian had used when he convinced me to invest.
I closed my laptop.
My hands were cold.
The money wasn't just disappearing.
It was being moved somewhere.
For something.
I needed answers.
And I knew exactly where to start.
Julian's office.
By noon, I was standing outside the glass building where Julian spent most of his days.
I hadn't planned to come here.
Not directly.
Rachel had warned me.
"Don't confront him without knowing what you're walking into.""
But I wasn't there to confront him.
I was there to observe.
The receptionist recognized me immediately.
"Mrs. Carter?""
The title almost made me laugh.
Mrs. Carter.
The woman who had been replaced before she even finished becoming a wife.
"Is Julian available?""
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
"He's traveling.""
Of course.
"Hawaii?""
Her eyes widened slightly.
That tiny reaction told me everything.
She knew.
"Actually," I said calmly, "I need to speak with someone else.""
"Who?""
"Marcus.""
The receptionist hesitated.
Then she picked up the phone.
A few minutes later, Marcus walked out.
He was younger than Julian, but his confidence always made him seem older.
"Clara.""
His smile disappeared when he saw my face.
"Is everything okay?""
I smiled politely.
"That depends.""
He glanced around.
"Can we talk somewhere private?""
We sat in a conference room.
For thirty seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I placed a folder on the table.
Marcus looked at it.
"What is this?""
"Your answer.""
He opened it.
The first page was the property record.
His expression changed.
The second page was the financial transfer.
His face became pale.
"Where did you get these?""
I ignored the question.
"How long have you known?""
Marcus looked away.
That was enough.
I leaned back.
"How long?""
He swallowed.
"Clara...""
"Don't protect him.""
"I'm not.""
"Then tell me.""
He ran a hand through his hair.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
"Six months.""
The number hit me.
Six months.
"Six months ago you knew my husband was planning something with Sienna?""
"It's not what you think.""
I almost laughed.
Everyone used that sentence when the truth was exactly what I thought.
"What is it, Marcus?""
He looked at me.
"Julian was going to leave.""
The room went silent.
My heart didn't break.
Not this time.
This time, it hardened.
"Leave me?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"He said he wanted to wait until after the wedding.""
I stared at him.
"After the wedding?""
"Because of the investors.""
I didn't understand.
Then I did.
The wedding wasn't about love.
It was about appearance.
Julian needed me.
My family.
My connections.
My reputation.
He needed the perfect image of a successful married man.
And once everything was secured...
He planned to disappear.
"Why tell me this now?"" I asked.
Marcus looked guilty.
"Because when I saw you at the airport...""
He stopped.
"You realized.""
I looked down at my hands.
The wedding ring was still there.
I hadn't put it back on.
"I thought you were his friend.""
"I was.""
"And now?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Now I think I made a mistake.""
I stood up.
"You're right.""
He looked surprised.
"I did.""
I picked up the folder.
"But not the one you think.""
"What do you mean?""
I looked at him.
"The mistake was believing people like Julian only hurt others when they're angry.""
I walked toward the door.
"They hurt people when they're comfortable.""
That evening, Rachel called.
"Clara, I have something.""
Her voice was serious.
"What?""
"I found another account.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Whose?""
A pause.
"Sienna's.""
I closed my eyes.
"What about it?""
"It isn't just connected to Julian.""
My heartbeat increased.
"Then who?""
Rachel answered quietly.
"Your father.""
I froze.
"What?""
"I think your father invested in the company expansion.""
I couldn't move.
My father.
The man who had walked me down the aisle.
The man who trusted Julian.
The man who had told me I was lucky to marry such a hardworking person.
"What does my father have to do with this?""
"I don't know yet.""
The city lights reflected against the window.
For the first time, I wondered if Julian's betrayal was bigger than I thought.
Maybe this wasn't just about a husband cheating.
Maybe it was about money.
Power.
And people I trusted.
Rachel continued.
"Clara, there's something else.""
"What?""
"The expansion project doesn't exist.""
My blood ran cold.
"What do you mean?""
"The documents Julian showed investors appear to be fake.""
I sat down slowly.
A fake business.
A hidden apartment.
A secret woman.
A stolen future.
Julian hadn't just betrayed my marriage.
He might have been building an entire illusion.
May you like
And somehow...
I was the last person to see it.
