Chapter 11: The Secret My Father Buried
My father showed up at Olivia's apartment the next morning.
I wasn't surprised.
After everything, I had learned one important lesson.
People appear when they fear losing control.
He stood outside the door holding a small box.
Not flowers.
Not an apology gift.
Something heavier.
Something personal.
"Clara.""
I looked at him.
For a moment, I saw the man from my childhood.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who stayed awake all night when I had a fever.
The man who walked me down the aisle.
That was what made it hurt.
Because betrayal from strangers is expected.
Betrayal from family changes how you see your entire past.
"Why are you here?""
He looked down.
"Because we need to talk.""
"That's what everyone says before they tell me something they should have told me months ago.""
The pain on his face was real.
But I wasn't ready to forgive.
Not yet.
"Can I come in?""
I stepped aside.
He entered quietly.
Olivia disappeared into the bedroom, giving us privacy.
My father placed the box on the table.
"I should have told you.""
"Yes.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
I looked at him.
"How long?""
He didn't pretend not to understand.
"About Julian?""
"About everything.""
He sat down.
"Almost a year.""
My heart sank.
A year.
The same amount of time I spent planning a wedding.
"You knew for a year?""
"Not everything.""
"But enough.""
He looked away.
"I knew Julian was making financial decisions I didn't agree with.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought I could handle it.""
I laughed quietly.
"Everyone thinks they can handle things for me.""
"Clara—"
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"You all decided I was too fragile for the truth.""
He looked ashamed.
And for the first time, I saw something I wasn't expecting.
Regret.
Real regret.
"I was wrong.""
The words surprised me.
My father rarely admitted mistakes.
"I thought Julian was ambitious.""
"He was.""
"I thought his mistakes came from pressure.""
"They didn't.""
He nodded.
"I know that now.""
I looked at the box.
"What is inside?""
He opened it.
Inside were old documents.
Contracts.
Letters.
Photos.
"I started investigating Julian after the first financial report.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because something didn't feel right.""
I picked up a document.
It was dated months before my wedding.
"You investigated him before I married him?""
My father looked down.
"Yes.""
The room felt colder.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"Suspected what?""
He hesitated.
Then:
"That Julian was using your marriage to strengthen his image.""
My chest tightened.
"So you knew my wedding might be a lie.""
"I didn't know.""
"But you suspected.""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
I stood.
I couldn't sit anymore.
"You watched me marry him.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"No.""
My voice became stronger.
"You were trying to protect yourself.""
He looked hurt.
But I continued.
"You didn't want to admit you made a mistake trusting him.""
Silence.
Because I was right.
My father had invested money.
His reputation.
His pride.
Admitting Julian was dangerous meant admitting he had failed.
Finally, he whispered:
"There is something else.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He handed me a document.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
My hands started shaking.
"This can't be real.""
"It is.""
The document showed ownership records.
A company.
A hidden company.
Connected to Julian.
And Sienna.
But the third name shocked me.
My father's former business partner.
A man named Richard Brooks.
Sienna's father.
I looked up.
"What does this mean?""
My father swallowed.
"Julian didn't meet Sienna recently.""
"What?""
"They knew each other before.""
"How?""
"They were connected through Richard.""
I stared at the documents.
The betrayal was becoming bigger.
More complicated.
More dangerous.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
My father looked at me.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
He answered quietly.
"That you would lose everything.""
I looked around the room.
At the apartment.
At my life.
The life I thought I had.
May you like
Then I said:
"I already did.""
