Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything
I didn't cry until I reached the airport parking garage.
Not because I wasn't hurt.
I was.
The pain was so deep it felt physical.
But crying in front of Julian would have given him something he didn't deserve.
An explanation.
A reaction.
Proof that he still had power over me.
I sat inside my car with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
For ten minutes, I didn't move.
The silence felt strange.
My wedding ring caught the sunlight through the windshield.
I stared at it.
Twenty-four hours ago, it represented the beginning of my life.
Now it felt like evidence from a crime scene.
My phone buzzed.
I expected Julian.
Instead, it was Olivia.
My best friend.
The woman who had stood beside me yesterday while I walked toward my future.
I answered.
"Hey.""
One word.
That was enough.
Olivia immediately knew something was wrong.
"Clara? What happened?""
I closed my eyes.
For years, Olivia had been the person who saw through my excuses.
Whenever Julian disappointed me, I found reasons for him.
He was stressed.
He was busy.
He had a difficult childhood.
He didn't mean it.
But today, I had nothing left to defend.
"He brought Sienna.""
Silence.
Then:
"What?""
"On the honeymoon.""
Another silence.
A longer one.
"Julian brought his assistant on your honeymoon?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
I laughed softly.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
"I don't even know anymore.""
I told her everything.
The airport.
The suitcase.
The white dress.
The way Sienna stood there like she belonged.
When I finished, Olivia didn't immediately respond.
She was angry.
I could hear it.
"Clara, come to my apartment.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
Because saying the answer out loud made it real.
"Because I don't know what happens now.""
Olivia softened.
"Then start with one thing. Don't chase him.""
I looked at my phone.
Even as she said it, another message appeared.
Julian.
*Where are you?*
A second message came.
*We need to talk.*
Then another.
*Don't overreact.*
I stared at those words.
Don't overreact.
The same phrase.
Always.
Like my feelings were a fire he had to put out.
I didn't answer.
Instead, I opened my laptop.
My hands moved automatically.
I logged into our joint accounts.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed the truth.
For the past year, Julian had been talking about expanding his company.
He had convinced me to invest some of my savings.
"It's our future," he told me.
I believed him.
But now, something felt wrong.
I checked the recent transactions.
Then I froze.
There it was.
A large transfer.
Not from his business account.
From ours.
To an account I didn't recognize.
My heart started beating faster.
I clicked on the details.
The name attached to the account made my entire body go cold.
Sienna Brooks.
I whispered her name.
The airport betrayal suddenly felt much smaller.
Because this wasn't just about a woman coming on a trip.
This had been planned.
I searched through more records.
Another transfer.
Then another.
Payments made over several months.
I took screenshots.
My hands were shaking.
Julian wasn't bringing Sienna because of work.
He was preparing something.
Something that involved my money.
Something that involved our marriage.
I called my attorney.
The woman who had helped my father with business contracts years ago.
Her name was Rachel.
When she answered, I didn't waste time.
"Rachel, I need help.""
Her voice immediately became serious.
"What happened?""
"I think my husband has been hiding financial information from me.""
"How long have you been married?""
I looked at my wedding ring.
"One day.""
A pause.
Then:
"Clara, what did he do?""
I looked out at the airport entrance.
People were walking toward their vacations.
Families laughing.
Couples holding hands.
Everyone moving toward happiness.
Except me.
"My husband went on our honeymoon with another woman.""
Rachel was quiet.
Then she said something I would never forget.
"Clara, don't confront him yet.""
"Why?""
"Because if he's been planning something, you need to know exactly what it is before he realizes you know.""
I understood.
For the first time all day, I felt like I had control.
Julian thought I had walked away because I was emotional.
Because I was hurt.
Because I would eventually forgive him.
He didn't know I was watching.
He didn't know I was investigating.
He didn't know the woman he underestimated was finally awake.
I looked at his last message.
*Don't overreact.*
I typed my response.
Then I deleted it.
Instead, I turned off my phone.
The old Clara would have begged for answers.
The old Clara would have waited for him to explain.
The old Clara would have fought for her marriage alone.
But that woman disappeared in the airport.
May you like
The woman sitting in that car was different.
And Julian was about to learn the difference.
