Chapter 9: The Secret Connection

The call came at 2:17 in the morning.

I knew immediately something was wrong.

Nobody calls at that hour with good news.

I answered without saying hello.

“Mr. Carter?””

My investigator.

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then:

“Something you need to see.””

I sat up.

“Send it.””

Within seconds, my phone received a file.

I opened it.

The first image appeared.

Ryan.

Standing outside a luxury office building.

Not a gym.

Not a training facility.

A corporate office.

The second image showed him meeting with someone.

Marcus Vale.

I stared at the screen.

The name suddenly became familiar.

Marcus Vale wasn’t a random businessman.

He was the CEO of one of my company’s competitors.

A man who had tried for years to acquire Carter Holdings.

And failed.

My stomach tightened.

“Keep going.””

My investigator continued.

“Ryan has been receiving money from an account connected to Vale Industries.””

“How much?””

“Enough.””

I looked through the records.

Thousands.

Repeated payments.

Monthly.

Consistent.

This wasn’t an affair.

This wasn’t a simple romance.

This was something else.

A plan.

My mind immediately returned to Laura.

The gym.

The sudden relationship.

The pressure for divorce.

The timing.

Everything.

I felt something I hadn’t felt in days.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because if Laura wasn’t just unfaithful…

If she had been manipulated…

Then Ethan had been dragged into something much bigger than a broken marriage.

I called my attorney immediately.

“We need to stop everything.””

“Daniel?””

“Do not sign any divorce agreements.””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Because this is no longer just about my marriage.””

I looked again at the photos.

Ryan smiling beside Marcus Vale.

Two men who thought they were invisible.

Two men who had no idea they had just revealed themselves.

My attorney became serious.

“What did you find?””

I answered quietly.

“Someone may have been trying to get access to my company.””

Silence.

Then:

“Through your wife?””

I looked toward the hallway.

Where Ethan’s room was.

Where my family had once been whole.

“Yes.””

I ended the call.

Then I sat there in the darkness.

For the first time since discovering Laura’s betrayal…

I wondered if the kiss I saw wasn’t the beginning of the disaster.

Maybe it was the distraction.

Maybe while everyone was watching the affair…

Someone else was making a move.

And the most terrifying thought entered my mind.

May you like

Laura might not have been the only person who betrayed me.

She might have just been the easiest one to see.
