Chapter 24: The Person Behind the Curtain

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Victor.

Again.

My mind raced through every possibility.

Was he lying?

Was Ethan mistaken?

Was there another explanation?

Children don’t understand adult secrets.

They remember faces.

Names.

Moments.

But sometimes they remember the most important things.

“What did Uncle Victor do here?””

Ethan continued playing.

“He brought me a gift.””

“What gift?””

“A model airplane.””

My heart tightened.

“Did he say anything?””

Ethan looked up.

“He said my dad was going to be a great leader.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because that sounded like Victor.

The mentor.

The teacher.

The man who always spoke about legacy.

But then Ethan added something else.

“He told me not to tell you.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

Ethan’s face changed.

“I’m sorry.””

I immediately softened.

“No, buddy. You’re not in trouble.””

He looked worried.

“Uncle Victor said it was a surprise.””

I nodded.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Not anymore.

I called Victor.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

“Did you visit my son?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to see him.””

“Without telling me?””

“I knew you were angry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Victor sighed.

“Daniel, I never wanted to hurt your family.””

“But you kept secrets.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because I was afraid.””

That surprised me.

Victor Hale.

Afraid.

“Of what?””

“Of becoming your enemy.””

The honesty was unexpected.

“Explain.””

“I made mistakes.””

He paused.

“But I never wanted you destroyed.””

I sat down.

“Then tell me everything.””

Victor finally revealed the missing piece.

Marcus’s plan had a final stage.

Not just taking Carter Holdings.

Destroying my credibility.

Making investors believe I was unstable.

Emotionally damaged.

Unable to lead.

The affair.

The family conflict.

The public scandal.

Everything was designed to create one image.

Daniel Carter was losing control.

And Victor had known.

He had been trying to stop it quietly.

But then I asked the question that mattered.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His answer hurt.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor’s voice cracked.

“Because he knew you would destroy yourself trying to protect everyone.””

I said nothing.

Because that was exactly what I would have done.

My father knew me.

Maybe too well.

Then Victor told me the final truth.

The person who started the attack was not Marcus.

Not David.

Not Michael.

Not Ryan.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been feeding information to everyone.

Someone who connected every piece.

“Who?””

Victor hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Who?””

He finally said:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

Impossible.

My mother had died years ago.

“What?””

“She wasn’t involved in the company.””

“Then how?””

Victor looked devastated.

“She left behind instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“She believed your father was hiding too much.””

I couldn’t understand.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Victor continued.

“Your mother discovered that your father had created a secret trust.””

“A trust?””

“For you.””

I stared.

“What does that have to do with everything?””

“The trust contained controlling shares of Carter Holdings.””

My breathing stopped.

Controlling shares.

The entire company.

“The shares were hidden.””

“Why?””

“Because your father believed someone would try to take the company after his death.””

“And my mother?””

Victor looked at me.

“She disagreed.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed you needed to learn the truth.””

I returned home carrying more questions than answers.

Laura saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I sat down.

“I found out something about my parents.””

She waited.

“My mother knew.””

“About what?””

“Everything.””

Laura looked shocked.

Then she whispered:

“Maybe she was trying to protect you too.””

I looked at her.

“Maybe.””

For the first time in months, I didn’t know who the enemy was.

Because everyone I thought was guilty had a reason.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had pain.

But pain didn’t excuse choices.

And secrets didn’t disappear because they came from love.

That night, I opened the final document from my father.

The one Victor said I was never supposed to see.

Inside was a recorded message.

My father’s voice filled the room.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

“If you’re watching this, then things went wrong.””

I sat completely still.

“I’m sorry.””

A pause.

“I spent my life building something I thought would protect our family.””

His voice became softer.

“But I forgot something.””

I leaned closer.

“Buildings can be protected.””

A pause.

“People cannot be controlled.””

The recording continued.

“The greatest threat to you will never be the people who hate you.””

I held my breath.

“It will be the people who love you enough to believe they know what is best for you.””

The screen went black.

I stared at my reflection.

Because suddenly I understood.

The war was never just about money.

It was about control.

Everyone wanted to protect me.

Everyone wanted to help me.

And somehow…

They all ended up hurting me.

Then my phone rang.

One final message appeared.

From an unknown number.

*“You finally know the truth.””*

May you like

A second message followed.

*“Now you need to decide whether you’re willing to lose everything to save the people who betrayed you.””*
