Chapter 6: The Signature That Could Change Everything

The meeting was scheduled for Friday morning.

Laura arrived at my office expecting a negotiation.

She expected lawyers.

Numbers.

Arguments.

She expected the man she thought she knew.

Instead, she walked into a room full of people who knew exactly who I was.

The legal team stood when I entered.

Not because they had to.

Because they respected me.

Laura noticed.

Her eyes moved around the room.

She looked confused.

“Daniel?””

I took my seat.

“Have a seat.””

She slowly sat down.

Her attorney opened his folder.

“Let’s begin.””

For the first twenty minutes, everything was normal.

Assets.

Property.

Financial arrangements.

Then my attorney placed a document on the table.

Laura looked at it.

“What is this?””

“Your shareholder agreement.””

Her expression changed.

“My what?””

I watched the realization slowly reach her face.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“For how long?””

“Since before we met.””

The room went silent.

Her attorney immediately started reading.

Then his expression changed.

“Ms. Carter…”

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“This agreement is very clear.””

Laura grabbed the paper.

I watched her eyes move across the page.

Then she looked at me.

“You never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

The question was almost emotional.

Not angry.

Confused.

I answered honestly.

“Because I wanted you to love me without knowing.””

Her face changed.

And for a second, I saw regret.

Real regret.

But then it disappeared.

Because regret and love are not the same thing.

“Daniel…”

I interrupted.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to discover my value after deciding I wasn’t enough.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never thought you weren’t enough.””

I looked at her.

“Ryan did.””

She froze.

“How do you know about that?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was already obvious.

She had no idea how much I knew.

She had no idea how much I had seen.

Her attorney cleared his throat.

“Mr. Carter, what exactly are your intentions?””

I looked at the documents.

Then at Laura.

“My intention is simple.””

Everyone waited.

“I want the truth.””

Laura whispered:

“What does that mean?””

“It means before I sign anything…”

I pushed the folder forward.

“You tell me everything.””

Her face turned pale.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“About Ryan?””

“About everything.””

The room became silent.

Because suddenly, this was no longer a divorce meeting.

It was an investigation.

And Laura finally understood something important.

The man she betrayed wasn’t begging her to stay.

He wasn’t fighting to save a marriage she had already abandoned.

He was simply waiting.

Waiting to discover how deep the betrayal really went.

And whatever secrets she had been hiding…

Were about to come into the light.
