Chapter 27: The Truth About My Father

The board meeting began at nine.

Everyone was there.

People who built the company.

People who benefited from it.

People who wanted to control it.

I stood at the front of the room.

For the first time in months, I wasn’t angry.

Anger makes you react.

I was done reacting.

“I called this meeting because Carter Holdings has been attacked.””

Everyone became silent.

“Not by one person.””

I looked around.

“By a network.””

The room shifted.

Some people avoided my eyes.

Some looked confused.

Some looked nervous.

I continued.

“Some of you knew.””

Silence.

“Some of you participated.””

More silence.

“And some of you were manipulated.””

I paused.

“But today, everyone will know the truth.””

I pressed the button.

The screen turned on.

Documents appeared.

Payments.

Messages.

Connections.

One by one.

Marcus.

David.

Ryan.

Jessica.

The room exploded with whispers.

Then I showed the next file.

Evelyn Stone.

The room changed.

Because several board members knew that name.

Then I revealed the final document.

The one Rachel gave me.

My father’s signature.

A secret agreement.

Everyone stared.

One board member whispered:

“What is this?””

I looked at the document.

“That is the question I’ve been asking.””

Then the doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Evelyn walked in.

Older.

Calm.

Completely composed.

The woman who had been hiding behind the curtain.

She looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I stared.

“You came.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

The room became silent.

She walked to the front.

“I worked with your mother.””

“I know.””

“She trusted me.””

“And you betrayed her.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone says that.

“I’m tired of mistakes.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I understand.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked around the room.

“Your father wasn’t protecting you from outsiders.””

She paused.

“He was protecting you from himself.””

The words shocked everyone.

Including me.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your father made a decision years ago.””

“What decision?””

“To fight the people attacking your company, he became like them.””

The room was silent.

I felt cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Your father created secret deals. Hidden accounts. Private arrangements.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed the only way to defeat powerful people was to become more powerful than them.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t sound like him.””

“It was the part of him he hated.””

That answer hurt.

Because suddenly my father became human again.

Not a legend.

Not a hero.

A man.

A man who made mistakes.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father realized what he had become.””

“And?””

“He tried to fix it.””

“How?””

“By creating the trust.””

I frowned.

“The trust was not only to protect the company.””

“What was it for?””

“To expose everyone involved.””

I stared.

My father had not been hiding the truth.

He had been collecting it.

Waiting.

Preparing.

But then why did he die without telling me?

Evelyn answered before I asked.

“Because he believed you weren’t ready.””

The words hurt.

Because part of me knew they were true.

At the end of the meeting, I had the final evidence.

The network was exposed.

The company was safe.

The enemies were revealed.

But I didn’t feel victorious.

I felt empty.

Because the greatest lesson I learned wasn’t about business.

It was about people.

Everyone carries secrets.

Everyone carries pain.

Everyone believes they are doing the right thing.

Sometimes they are.

Sometimes they aren’t.

That night, I returned home.

Laura was waiting.

“How did it go?””

I sat beside her.

“It’s over.””

She smiled slightly.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

Then she asked the question I expected.

“What happens now?””

I looked toward Ethan’s room.

I thought about everything we lost.

Everything we survived.

Everything we still had.

“I don’t know.””

She nodded.

For once, neither of us pretended.

But then my phone buzzed.

One final message.

A photo.

Ethan.

At school.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should not have been there.

The message underneath said:

*“You exposed the past.””*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*“Now meet the person controlling the future.””*
