Chapter 18: The Last Person I Expected

The investigation into David opened more doors than I wanted.

And behind every door was another secret.

That was the hardest part.

Not finding betrayal.

Learning how long it had existed.

David had been quietly moving information for months.

Financial reports.

Expansion plans.

Acquisition strategies.

Nothing that immediately destroyed us.

Just enough to help Marcus understand our weaknesses.

But there was one thing that bothered me.

One missing piece.

Who gave David access to my personal life?

Because knowing company information was one thing.

Knowing my marriage was falling apart was another.

That information was too specific.

Too personal.

Then we found it.

A message.

One conversation.

One name.

Laura.

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

My investigator looked uncomfortable.

“We verified it.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because some things are harder to accept the second time.

I had already survived discovering Laura’s affair.

I had already accepted her betrayal.

But another connection?

Another secret?

I didn’t know if I had the strength.

“What did she send?””

The investigator hesitated.

“Information about your schedule.””

I felt cold.

“My schedule?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I called Laura.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

She knew immediately something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I placed the evidence in front of her.

She read it.

And the color left her face.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

“That David was involved.””

I watched her.

“Did you send him information?””

She started crying.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Even though I expected it.

“When?””

“Before I knew.””

“Before you knew what?””

“That Ryan was using me.””

I looked away.

“Explain.””

She wiped her tears.

“I thought you were planning to leave me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“I was scared.””

Her voice shook.

“Ryan kept telling me you were preparing something. He said you were going to take everything away from me.””

I said nothing.

“He told me David could help.””

The room felt smaller.

“What information did you give?””

“My schedule.””

“Only that?””

“Yes.””

I searched her face.

And this time, I believed her.

Because I knew what guilt looked like.

This wasn’t the guilt of someone caught lying.

This was the guilt of someone realizing they had helped hurt the person they loved.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked down.

“You keep saying that.””

“I know.””

“And I keep hearing it.””

She nodded.

“But I need you to understand something.””

She looked up.

“This wasn’t just about cheating.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“This was about trust.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

That night, I sat alone in my office.

The company was safe.

Marcus was exposed.

David was finished.

Ryan’s lies were uncovered.

But my life was still complicated.

Because the people who hurt me were not strangers.

They were people I loved.

People I trusted.

People I defended.

My phone buzzed.

A new email.

Unknown sender.

One sentence.

*“You found the traitors. But you still haven’t found the person who started it all.””*

I stared at the message.

Then another line appeared.

*“Ask your wife what happened before the gym.””*

My heartbeat changed.

Before the gym?

What did that mean?

I looked at the message again.

Then slowly raised my eyes.

Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.

The betrayal I discovered…

May you like

Might not have started with Ryan.

It might have started long before I ever opened those gym doors.
