Chapter 10: The Game Hidden Behind the Affair

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Not because I was heartbroken.

Those emotions had already burned themselves out.

What kept me awake was the realization that the betrayal I discovered might have been only a small piece of something much larger.

For days, I thought my enemy was Ryan.

Then I thought it was Laura.

Now I wasn’t sure anymore.

And uncertainty was something I hated.

In business, uncertainty was dangerous.

In family, it was devastating.

I sat in my office at home, staring at the documents my investigator had sent.

Ryan Mitchell.

Marcus Vale.

Payments.

Meetings.

Connections.

The more I looked, the clearer the pattern became.

Ryan wasn’t just a personal trainer who fell in love with a married woman.

He was placed in the right position.

At the right time.

With the right access.

That was not an accident.

The question was:

Who chose him?

And why Laura?

My phone buzzed.

A message from my investigator.

*“There’s more.””*

I immediately called.

“Tell me.””

His voice was low.

“We found another connection.””

“What connection?””

“Ryan wasn’t introduced to your wife randomly.””

I stood up.

“What do you mean?””

“He was recommended.””

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone connected to your wife’s workplace.””

I frowned.

“Name.””

“Jessica Morgan.””

My expression changed.

Jessica.

Laura’s closest friend.

The woman who had spent countless dinners at our house.

The woman who always told Laura she deserved more.

The woman who once said I was “too predictable.””

I remembered that night.

I had laughed.

I thought it was a joke.

Now it felt different.

“Find everything.””

“I already started.””

I ended the call.

For years, I believed betrayal came from strangers.

People outside your life.

Enemies.

Competitors.

People you expected to hurt you.

Nobody warns you that sometimes the most dangerous people are the ones sitting at your dinner table.

The next morning, I confronted Laura.

Not with anger.

Not with accusations.

I asked one question.

“Who introduced you to Ryan?””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“Who introduced you?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Jessica.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Your friend Jessica?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Laura shrugged.

“She knew I wanted a better trainer.””

“A better trainer?””

“Yes.””

I watched her carefully.

“Did Jessica know Ryan before?””

“I think so.””

“How well?””

Laura looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because it wasn’t uncertainty.

It was avoidance.

“Laura.””

“What?””

“Did Jessica ever talk about me?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What do you mean?””

“You know what I mean.””

She looked away.

“She just thought you were… too focused on work.””

There it was.

The same idea.

The same narrative.

Daniel is distant.

Daniel doesn’t understand.

Daniel isn’t exciting.

It was almost impressive how carefully they had built that story.

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

“Did she ever encourage you to leave me?””

Laura didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

“Wow.””

Her eyes filled.

“Daniel, it wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

“She just listened.””

“People who want to help you don’t secretly introduce you to someone else.””

Laura looked hurt.

“You’re making assumptions.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I’m connecting facts.””

Later that day, I visited Jessica’s office.

She worked for the same marketing company as Laura.

When I walked in, she immediately smiled.

“Daniel.””

That smile.

Friendly.

Warm.

Fake.

“I didn’t expect to see you here.””

“I’m sure.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“What’s going on?””

“I wanted to ask you something.””

“Okay.””

“How did you meet Ryan?””

The question caught her off guard.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

“Through the gym.””

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“Because Ryan’s records show you recommended him.””

She laughed softly.

“Of course I did. I told Laura about him.””

“Why?””

“Because she needed confidence.””

I studied her.

“Confidence.””

“Yes.””

She leaned back.

“Daniel, don’t make this weird.””

“I’m not making anything weird.””

I placed a folder on her desk.

She looked at it.

“What’s that?””

“Information.””

She didn’t touch it.

“What kind of information?””

“The kind that explains why a personal trainer is receiving money from Marcus Vale.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But it happened.

And that was enough.

“You know Marcus?””

“I know exactly who he is.””

Jessica became quiet.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I want you to understand something.””

She looked at me.

“You spent years believing I was just a quiet man who worked too much.””

I leaned forward.

“That was your mistake.””

That evening, I received another message.

This time from my investigator.

*“Jessica met Marcus Vale six times before introducing Ryan to Laura.””*

I stared at the message.

Six times.

The situation was no longer suspicious.

It was deliberate.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had studied my life.

My marriage.

My weaknesses.

Then I saw the final line.

*“There is one more person involved.””*

I called immediately.

“Who?””

The answer made my blood run cold.

“Your brother.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Michael Carter.””

My younger brother.

The man who had attended my wedding.

The man who hugged Ethan every Christmas.

The man who always told me he was proud of me.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

I refused to believe it.

But then again…

That was exactly how betrayal worked.

May you like

It never came from people you expected.

It came from the people you trusted.
