Chapter 3: The Woman Who Thought She Won

Laura called me twelve times that day.

I ignored every call.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed space.

The woman who betrayed me suddenly wanted to talk.

Funny how people often want explanations only after their secrets are discovered.

At noon, she sent a message.

“Daniel, please. We need to talk.””

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“I made a mistake.””

A mistake.

That word.

People use it when they want to make something smaller.

A mistake is forgetting an appointment.

A mistake is buying the wrong thing.

A mistake is not destroying your family in front of your child.

I didn’t reply.

A few minutes later, my phone rang again.

This time, I answered.

Silence.

Then her voice.

“Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

“I’m sorry.””

I waited.

“That’s all?””

“What do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

She went quiet.

Finally, she whispered:

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Laura, you kissed another man.””

“I know.””

“You brought me and Ethan into that gym and let our son see it.””

“I didn’t know you were coming.””

“That’s your defense?””

“No…”

Her voice cracked.

“I just need you to understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That things between us haven’t been good for a long time.””

There it was.

The excuse.

The story she had probably been telling herself.

The marriage was unhappy.

She felt lonely.

She deserved happiness.

People often create reasons after they do something wrong.

Because admitting the truth is harder.

“I tried,” I said.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Silence.

“I tried every day.””

My voice became colder.

“I worked late because I was building a future for us. I stayed quiet when you changed because I thought you were finding yourself. I trusted you because I loved you.””

“Daniel…”

“But you were already gone.””

She started crying.

For a moment, the old me wanted to comfort her.

The husband.

The partner.

The man who spent eleven years protecting her heart.

But that man was exhausted.

“I need time,” I said.

“Are you leaving me?””

I looked around my office.

At the city.

At everything I had built.

“No.””

A pause.

“Not yet.””

And those two words changed everything.

Because Laura still didn’t understand.

She thought I was broken.

She thought I was the man who lost.

She thought Ryan had won.

But she had no idea that while she was chasing excitement inside a gym, she had just awakened a side of me she had never seen.

And soon, she would learn the truth.

The quiet husband she betrayed…

Was the one person standing between her and losing everything.
