Chapter 20: The Woman Who Held the Missing Piece
After everything I discovered, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore.
I was wrong.
Because the final piece of the puzzle came from someone I never expected.
Jessica.
The woman who started the entire chain.
The woman who introduced Laura to Ryan.
The woman who convinced my wife she deserved another life.
She contacted me.
Not through a lawyer.
Not through a representative.
Personally.
The message was simple.
*“I need to tell you the truth before it’s too late.””*
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But curiosity won.
We met at a quiet café outside the city.
Jessica arrived fifteen minutes late.
She looked different.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Scared.
She sat across from me.
“I know you hate me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t have time for emotions.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“Then talk.””
She took a breath.
“I didn’t know how far it would go.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
“I’m serious.””
I waited.
She looked down.
“Marcus contacted me a year ago.””
“Why?””
“He knew I was close to Laura.””
Of course.
“She paid you.””
Jessica nodded.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Enough to make me think it wasn’t dangerous.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone says that before they realize danger is not always obvious.
“What was your job?””
Jessica looked ashamed.
“To influence Laura.””
The word was ugly.
Influence.
A softer word for manipulation.
“How?””
“By making her question everything.””
She looked at me.
“Your marriage. Your choices. Your relationship.””
“And Ryan?””
“I introduced them.””
The answer still hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Why?””
“Because Marcus wanted someone who could get close.””
Jessica’s voice became quieter.
“But I didn’t know the entire plan.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
That surprised me.
“I don’t.””
She looked at me.
“I know what I did.””
Jessica gave me something.
A flash drive.
“Everything I have.””
I looked at it.
“What is this?””
“Records.””
“Of what?””
“Meetings. Payments. Instructions.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why give this to me?””
She looked away.
“Because Marcus was never going to protect me.””
That was the reality.
People like Marcus didn’t have partners.
They had tools.
And tools were disposable.
That night, James reviewed the files.
Two hours later, he called.
“Daniel.””
His voice sounded different.
“What?””
“You need to come in.””
“Why?””
“Because there’s something here.””
I arrived at the office immediately.
James placed the flash drive on the screen.
One file.
One document.
One name.
I stared.
“No.””
James looked at me.
“You know him?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I did.
The document showed a private agreement.
A contract.
Between Marcus Vale and another person.
Someone who had been secretly financing the entire operation.
Someone who wanted control of Carter Holdings.
Someone who had access to everything.
The name appeared.
My blood ran cold.
*Robert Carter.*
My father.
Dead for eight years.
I stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
James looked confused.
“Daniel?””
“My father is dead.””
He nodded.
“Then someone is using his name.””
I leaned closer.
The signature.
The account.
Everything.
My father’s identity was connected to the plan.
But why?
Why would anyone use my father?
Then I noticed the date.
The agreement was created three months before my father died.
Three months.
Which meant one terrifying possibility.
My father knew something.
And he took that secret to his grave.
I went home and opened the old box I kept in storage.
My father’s belongings.
Letters.
Documents.
Photographs.
Things I hadn’t touched in years.
I searched until I found an envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not Daniel.
Not son.
My full name.
Daniel Alexander Carter.
My hands shook.
Because I knew.
May you like
Whatever was inside this envelope…
Would change everything.
