Chapter 11: The Brother Who Wanted My Crown
Michael arrived at my office the next morning without an appointment.
That alone told me something.
Michael never came without warning.
Not unless he was nervous.
He walked in wearing an expensive suit and a confident smile.
The same smile he had worn his entire life.
“Daniel.””
I looked up from my desk.
“Michael.””
He noticed my tone.
His smile faded.
“Something wrong?””
I closed the folder in front of me.
“Sit down.””
He sat.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he laughed lightly.
“This feels serious.””
“It is.””
He looked around my office.
“You’ve built something amazing here.””
I didn’t respond.
“You know, I always told people my brother was different.””
Still nothing.
“More disciplined.””
I stared at him.
“And yet here you are.””
His expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“I know about Marcus.””
The room went silent.
A person can hide emotions.
But not instantly.
Michael’s eyes moved.
A fraction.
A tiny reaction.
But I saw it.
“You know Marcus?””
“I know you do.””
He leaned back.
“Daniel, I think you’re misunderstanding something.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“Whatever this is about, I’m sure there’s an explanation.””
I almost admired how quickly he adapted.
Almost.
“You met with him seven times.””
Silence.
“You helped him get close to my company.””
“Absolutely not.””
“You think I wouldn’t check?””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You’ve been investigating me?””
“I investigate threats.””
He stared at me.
“Am I a threat now?””
I didn’t answer.
Because that was the question.
Was my own brother a threat?
Or was he just another person I had trusted too much?
“Why?”” I asked.
His expression softened.
“Why what?””
“Why would you do this?””
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
He laughed quietly.
A bitter laugh.
“Because I spent my entire life being your shadow.””
I said nothing.
“You were always the successful one.””
“Michael…”
“No.””
He stood.
“You got the company. The money. The respect.””
I stared at him.
“You think I was given those things?””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I think you were lucky.””
There it was.
The resentment.
The thing he had buried for years.
“I worked twenty years for what I have.””
“And I watched everyone celebrate you.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Even our parents.””
I shook my head.
“This is insane.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“This is reality.””
“Your reality.””
He smiled.
“You know what the funny thing is?””
“What?””
“You always thought people loved you because of who you were.””
He paused.
“But most people love what you can give them.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because some part of me feared they were true.
But not everyone.
Not Ethan.
Not the people who stayed when I had nothing.
“Did Marcus promise you something?””
Michael looked away.
That answer was enough.
“What?””
“A position.””
Silence.
“A piece of the company?””
Still silence.
I nodded slowly.
“I see.””
Michael looked back.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice became calm.
“I understand perfectly.””
That afternoon, I made a decision.
Not emotional.
Not impulsive.
A business decision.
Michael’s access to company information was removed.
His accounts were reviewed.
His involvement with Marcus was documented.
But I didn’t destroy him.
Not yet.
Because I still needed answers.
And there was one question I couldn’t ignore.
Why use Laura?
Why risk my marriage?
Why bring my son into it?
The answer came hours later.
My investigator called.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We found the reason.””
I waited.
“Ryan wasn’t trying to steal your wife.””
A chill went through me.
“What was he trying to do?””
The answer was simple.
“Get close enough to access your personal information.””
I closed my eyes.
The affair was never the goal.
May you like
It was the door.
And Laura had unknowingly opened it.
