Chapter 26: The Woman Who Knew My Family’s Secrets

Rachel chose the location carefully.

A small park outside the city.

Public.

Open.

Safe.

Someone who was afraid.

That was my first thought.

When I arrived, she was sitting alone.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

No sense of control.

Just fear.

She looked up when she saw me.

“Daniel Carter.””

I sat across from her.

“You know who I am.””

She gave a sad smile.

“I’ve known who you are for a long time.””

That sentence immediately caught my attention.

“How?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because your mother trusted me.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Your mother was one of the smartest people I ever met.””

I waited.

“She knew your father was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“Because everyone was afraid of what would happen if you knew.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me.””

Rachel nodded.

“Your father and mother discovered that Marcus Vale wasn’t the only person trying to take Carter Holdings.””

“Who else?””

She looked at me.

“The board.””

I frowned.

“The board?””

“Yes.””

The word hit differently.

Because I had been looking outside.

Enemies.

Competitors.

People who wanted to steal.

But maybe the danger had always been inside.

“Who?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know everyone.””

“But you know someone.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

I waited.

“Evelyn Stone.””

The name meant nothing.

“Who is she?””

“She was your mother’s attorney.””

I frowned.

“My mother had a private attorney?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother didn’t trust company lawyers.””

That made sense.

“What did Evelyn know?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Everything.””

She gave me documents.

Old documents.

Letters.

Emails.

Records from years ago.

I read through them.

And slowly, everything changed.

Evelyn had been managing my mother’s private investigation.

Not because she wanted control.

Because she discovered someone was moving money through hidden accounts.

The same accounts connected to Marcus.

The same accounts connected to Victor.

The same accounts connected to the current attacks.

But then I found something strange.

One document.

A payment.

Signed by Evelyn.

To someone inside Carter Holdings.

Someone who was still there today.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Rachel went silent.

“I don’t know.””

“Rachel.””

“I don’t know.””

But her expression told me she did.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Your mother never found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That the person helping the attackers was someone she trusted.””

I stared.

Again.

Trust.

The word followed me everywhere.

I returned home with the documents.

Laura was waiting.

“What happened?””

I placed everything down.

She read.

Then looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“This never ends.””

I understood exactly what she meant.

Every answer created another question.

Every truth revealed another secret.

But then Ethan walked into the room.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“Yeah?””

“Are we okay?””

The question stopped everything.

Because children don’t care about corporations.

They don’t care about power.

They care about whether the people they love are still there.

I knelt beside him.

“Yes.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Laura.

“Even Mom?””

Laura’s eyes filled.

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

Because whatever happened between adults…

A child deserved security.

That evening, I made a decision.

I would stop running after secrets.

I would force them into the open.

The next morning, I called a company-wide meeting.

Every executive.

Every board member.

Everyone involved.

I wasn’t going to fight shadows anymore.

I was going to turn on the lights.

Before the meeting started, I received one final message.

Not from Rachel.

Not from an unknown number.

From Evelyn.

*“Daniel, before you expose everyone, ask yourself one question.””*

I stared.

Then another message arrived.

*“Are you prepared to learn what your father did?””*

I froze.

My father.

Again.

Everyone had blamed secrets.

May you like

But nobody had explained the biggest one.

What did my father do?
