Chapter 12: The Woman Caught Between Love and Lies

When I told Laura the truth, I expected anger.

Denial.

Maybe even disbelief.

I expected her to defend Ryan.

Instead, she collapsed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“You’re saying he used me?””

I looked at her.

“I’m saying I believe he had another reason for being close to you.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Laura.””

“No.””

She covered her face.

“He loved me.””

I stayed silent.

Because sometimes people need to say something out loud before they realize they don’t believe it.

“He told me I was special.””

I looked away.

“Laura.””

“He said he understood me.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because those were exactly the words people use when they want access to someone vulnerable.

“He knew exactly what to say.””

She looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he studied you.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“He knew what you felt was missing.””

Silence.

“He knew you were unhappy.””

She looked down.

“He knew you wanted excitement.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And he gave it to you.””

She whispered:

“I was so stupid.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t want to hurt her.

But I also couldn’t comfort her.

Not yet.

That night, Laura asked to see Ethan.

She sat beside him on his bed.

I watched from the doorway.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?””

The question was innocent.

Pure.

Laura started crying.

“Because Mommy made a mistake.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Are you coming home?””

Laura looked at me.

Then back at him.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt him.

I saw it.

But at least it was honest.

After she left the room, I found Ethan staring at the floor.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Is Mom still my mom?””

I knelt beside him.

“Always.””

“Even if she hurts us?””

I took a deep breath.

“Yes.””

He thought about that.

Then asked:

“Can people love you and still hurt you?””

That question stayed with me.

Because it was the question I had been asking myself.

“Yes,” I finally said.

“Sometimes they can.””

The next morning, my investigator sent me one final piece of information.

A video.

I opened it.

It showed Ryan meeting Marcus.

But this time, I heard the conversation.

Ryan was smiling.

“She’s almost done.””

Marcus nodded.

“And Carter?””

Ryan laughed.

“He has no idea.””

My hands tightened.

Then Marcus asked:

“What about the wife?””

Ryan shrugged.

“She thinks it’s love.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

Then Ryan said the words that changed everything.

“Once Daniel signs the transfer documents, we’re finished.””

I stopped the video.

Transfer documents.

They weren’t trying to destroy my marriage.

They were trying to steal my company.

And suddenly, everything became clear.

Laura wasn’t the enemy.

She was a target.

A vulnerable person used by people who understood exactly how to manipulate her.

But there was still one problem.

She had helped them.

Whether she knew it or not.

And now I had to decide something impossible.

May you like

Protect the woman who betrayed me…

Or protect myself from the consequences of trusting her.
