Chapter 9: The Daughter My Father Tried To Erase
After Susan left, nobody spoke for nearly an hour.
The truth was too heavy.
Too disturbing.
Too impossible.
I kept repeating the same thought in my mind.
No.
It couldn’t be.
There had to be another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
Anything.
But deep down, I knew.
My father had spent years building a wall of lies.
And now every brick was falling.
Lily sat upstairs.
She hadn’t cried.
That scared me more than tears.
Crying meant emotion.
Silence meant she was shutting down.
I knocked softly on her bedroom door.
“Sweetheart?””
No answer.
I opened it slowly.
She sat on the floor beside her bed.
The same place where Mark had found the velvet box.
I sat beside her.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
“Did Grandpa know?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
Her voice was quiet.
“He knew everything.””
I couldn’t argue.
Because maybe she was right.
“He raised me.””
I looked at her.
“He was there when I learned to ride a bike.””
Her voice cracked.
“He was the person I trusted.””
I held back my tears.
“I know.””
“Why would someone who loved me do this?””
That was the question I had no answer for.
Because love was not always pure.
Sometimes people mixed love with control.
Sometimes they convinced themselves they were protecting someone when they were really protecting themselves.
The next morning, we received another message.
This time, it wasn’t a letter.
It was a video.
Sent from an unknown number.
Mark played it.
And my father appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably him.
My heart stopped.
“Emily,” he said.
Hearing his voice almost broke me.
“I know you found the truth.””
I stared at the screen.
“You have questions.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Questions?
That was the understatement of the century.
My father continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I did what I did because I had no choice.””
My hands tightened.
“No choice?””
I whispered.
“You always had a choice.””
The video continued.
“Lily was never supposed to be part of this.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
He looked away.
“Her existence put her in danger.””
Lily stepped closer to the screen.
“Danger from who?””
My father didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“If you are watching this, then they found you.””
Mark looked confused.
“Who?””
The video continued.
“Do not trust anyone who comes looking for Lily.””
Then the screen went black.
That was it.
No explanation.
No apology.
Just another warning.
Another secret.
I looked at Mark.
“He’s still hiding something.””
Mark nodded.
“We need to find him.””
But before we could do anything, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Mrs. Davis?””
“Yes.””
“You need to stop searching for your father.””
My heart raced.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knows what happens when people uncover the wrong secrets.””
I stood.
“Where is my father?””
The man ignored the question.
“Your daughter is not the only person he lied to.””
I looked at Lily.
“What does that mean?””
The caller lowered his voice.
“It means your family has been built on a lie for thirty years.””
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Thirty years.
My father’s entire life.
My entire family.
Everything.
Then Lily noticed something.
“Mom.””
I turned.
She was looking at the video screen.
At the final frozen frame.
“What?””
She pointed.
“There.””
I walked closer.
Behind my father.
On the wall.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
I recognized it immediately.
Because I had seen it before.
It was the same picture Rachel had shown us.
My father holding baby Lily.
But now I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.
Standing beside him.
A man.
A man whose face had been partially hidden.
A man wearing the same gold ring.
The same ring my father had given Lily.
And beneath the photograph was a date.
A date that changed everything.
May you like
Because it was taken…
Four months before Lily was born.
