Chapter 14: The Family Member Who Wanted Everything

The name was never spoken.

Not immediately.

Because everyone in that room understood something.

A person who could disappear for decades.

A person who could manipulate records.

A person who could threaten an entire family.

Was not someone to underestimate.

My father looked exhausted.

“I thought I could control it.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

His eyes lowered.

“I thought if Lily stayed hidden, she would be safe.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“You hid her because you were afraid.””

He didn’t deny it.

That was the first honest thing he had done.

Thomas walked toward him.

“You should have told us.””

My father looked at him.

“You don’t understand what he’s capable of.””

“Then tell them.””

My father was silent.

Finally, he said:

“His name is Richard.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to my father.

Something painful.

“My older brother.””

I felt confused.

“You never had a brother.””

My father looked at me.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

The room became silent.

“He was removed from the family records.””

“Why?””

My father swallowed.

“Because he tried to take control of everything.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid too.””

That answer was becoming too familiar.

Fear.

Always fear.

My father continued.

“Richard believed the inheritance belonged to him.””

“And Lily?””

“She was proof that it didn’t.””

I looked at my daughter.

A person who had spent her entire life being pulled into a war she never started.

“So he wanted her gone.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

The words made my blood run cold.

Lily’s face went pale.

“But why did Grandpa protect me?””

My father looked at her.

“Because I loved you.””

Nobody expected that answer.

Not even me.

He continued.

“I know what you think of me.””

Lily looked away.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“You used me.””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Then don’t say you loved me like that fixes everything.””

My father looked broken.

Because she was right.

Love did not erase damage.

It did not undo years of pain.

It did not bring back lost time.

Then Richard appeared.

Not physically.

Through a message.

Thomas’s phone rang.

He answered.

And immediately his face changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He put the phone on speaker.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“So everyone finally gathered.””

My blood turned cold.

Richard.

“You should have stayed away,” the voice continued.

My father stood.

“You leave her alone.””

A laugh.

“You still think you can protect them.””

Lily stepped closer to me.

The voice continued.

“You know what the problem was, little brother?””

My father said nothing.

“You always thought you were the smartest person in the room.””

The line went quiet.

Then:

“But you forgot one thing.””

A pause.

“I was watching too.””

The call ended.

Thomas immediately checked his phone.

“He sent a location.””

“What?””

He looked at the screen.

“He wants us to come.””

My father’s face changed.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s a trap.””

Of course it was.

Everything had been.

But before anyone could stop us, Lily spoke.

“I’m going.””

Everyone turned.

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I’m done hiding.””

I wanted to argue.

Every instinct in me screamed to protect her.

But I remembered her words.

Everyone decided for her.

I took her hand.

“Then we go together.””

The location was an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The place looked exactly like the kind of place where secrets ended.

Richard was waiting.

When we walked in, he stood beneath a single hanging light.

He looked older.

But there was something about him.

Something cold.

Something familiar.

He looked at Lily.

“So you finally came.””

She stared at him.

“Why?””

He smiled slightly.

“You really don’t know?””

“No.””

“You’re standing on top of a fortune.””

Lily’s expression changed.

“I’m not money.””

Richard laughed.

“You have no idea what you are.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Richard looked at him.

“You ruined everything.””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“You did.””

Richard smiled.

Then he looked at me.

“You should ask your father what else he hid.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Richard looked pleased.

“Because he never told you the most important part.””

I turned toward my father.

His face changed.

And I knew.

There was one more secret.

One more thing.

“No,” I whispered.

Richard smiled.

“Ask him who Lily’s real mother was.””

Everyone froze.

Rachel stepped forward.

“What?””

Richard looked at her.

“You were never the whole story.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“I’m saying the woman who gave birth to you…”

May you like

He paused.

“Was not the woman everyone told you.””
