Chapter 12: The Betrayal Sitting Across From Me

I don’t remember leaving the farmhouse.

I remember walking outside.

I remember the cold air hitting my face.

I remember hearing Mark calling my name.

But I don’t remember answering.

Because something inside me had broken.

Not because of my father.

I had already accepted that he was not the man I thought he was.

But Mark.

My husband.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

The person who promised to stand beside me forever.

He had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Enough to let me live inside a lie.

When we got home, I went straight upstairs.

Lily followed me.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

She looked scared.

Not for herself.

For me.

That broke my heart.

“I’m okay.””

She shook her head.

“No, you’re not.””

I sat down.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For all of this.””

She sat beside me.

“You didn’t do this.””

I looked at her.

“You shouldn’t have to comfort me.””

A sad smile appeared.

“I think we both got hurt by the same people.””

Those words made me cry.

Because she was right.

For the first time in days, we weren’t separated by secrets.

We were together.

A few hours later, Mark came upstairs.

He looked broken.

“Can I talk to you?””

I didn’t answer.

He sat across from me.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

His eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone was afraid.””

“I thought I could protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Emily…”

“No one protected me.””

My voice cracked.

“You protected the secret.””

He looked down.

And that silence was his answer.

“Tell me everything.””

He took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Your father’s files.””

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“I saw things that didn’t make sense.””

“Like?””

“Payments.””

My heart sank.

“Payments to people involved in the adoption.””

I stared.

“And you still stayed silent?””

“I confronted your father.””

“What did he say?””

Mark looked away.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“He said if I exposed him, Lily’s adoption could be challenged.””

My anger softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

But softened.

Because I understood.

He had been afraid of losing her.

But fear still had consequences.

“What did you do?””

“I made a deal.””

I felt cold.

“What kind of deal?””

“I promised not to investigate.””

The room went silent.

“For six years?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Six years of silence.

Six years of lies.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

“Dad?””

Mark froze.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked hurt.

Not angry.

That was worse.

“You knew?””

Mark started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

She shook her head.

“Everyone says that.””

Then she walked away.

The next morning, we received news.

My father had been found.

Not by the police.

By Thomas.

He had tracked him to a small town near the border.

And he was ready to talk.

But before we could leave, another message arrived.

A photograph.

Of Lily.

Taken recently.

Not years ago.

Recently.

Someone had been watching her.

Again.

On the back was a note.

*You found the wrong truth.*

I felt a chill.

Because that meant something terrifying.

Everything we had uncovered…

Everything we believed was the answer…

Was only another layer.

Thomas had warned us.

My father had warned us.

Someone was still hiding the biggest secret.

Then Lily noticed something in the photograph.

“Mom.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed.

In the background.

A reflection in a car window.

A person standing there.

Watching.

She whispered:

“That’s Grandpa.””

My blood ran cold.

Because my father wasn’t missing.

He wasn’t hiding.

May you like

He was close.

And he had been watching us the entire time.
