Chapter 8: The Secret Buried In The Birth Records
The moment we left the coffee shop, Lily didn’t say a word.
She walked ahead of us, holding the medical document in her hand.
I knew that look.
I had seen it before.
Not the look of anger.
The look of someone trying to understand how their entire life could have been built on missing pieces.
When we reached the car, she finally stopped.
“Mom.””
I looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Was anything real?””
The question destroyed me.
“What do you mean?””
“My name.””
She looked at the document.
“My birthday.””
She swallowed.
“My adoption.””
She looked at me.
“Was any of it real?””
I stepped toward her.
“All of it.””
“How do you know?””
I froze.
Because that was the problem.
I didn’t know anymore.
I had believed.
I had trusted.
But belief wasn’t proof.
“I know because I love you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know you love me.””
She looked away.
“But everyone keeps saying they did things because they loved me.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
Every person who hurt her claimed they were protecting her.
Her grandfather.
Her biological mother.
Her father.
Even Mark.
Everyone had made decisions for her.
Nobody had asked her.
That night, we returned home and began searching through every document we had.
Birth certificates.
Adoption papers.
Medical records.
Anything connected to Lily.
Mark sat at the table, reviewing paperwork.
“I found something.””
I looked over.
“What?””
He held up an old folder.
“This was from the adoption agency.””
I walked closer.
“What about it?””
“There’s a signature missing.””
“Whose?””
He pointed.
“The biological father.””
I frowned.
“Isn’t that normal?””
“No.””
Mark shook his head.
“Not for a closed adoption.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone intentionally removed his information.””
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting quietly nearby.
Listening.
“Who could do that?””
Mark looked at me.
“Someone with access.””
The answer was obvious.
My father.
A knock interrupted us.
All three of us froze.
Nobody expected anyone.
Mark stood slowly.
“I’ll check.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Be careful.””
He opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
She looked around fifty.
She held an envelope.
“Are you Emily Davis?””
My heart started pounding.
“Yes.””
She handed me the envelope.
“My name is Susan. I worked with your father.””
I stared.
“What kind of work?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Private investigations.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
She looked at Lily.
“I think you need to know what he was investigating.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Photographs of Lily.
At school.
Walking with friends.
Sitting at a restaurant.
Leaving our house.
My hands started shaking.
“He was watching her.””
Susan nodded.
“For years.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
She looked at the ground.
“Because he was trying to find someone.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Lily’s biological father.””
Everyone went silent.
“But why?””
Susan hesitated.
“Because your father believed he was dangerous.””
Daniel’s words came back.
My father knew he would come.
“What did my father find?””
Susan looked at Lily.
“He found out the truth about her birth.””
Lily stood.
“What truth?””
Susan opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.””
“You came here.””
Lily’s voice shook.
“You already decided.””
Susan looked at her sadly.
“You were not supposed to survive.””
The room went silent.
I felt the air disappear.
“What did you say?””
Susan looked at me.
“When you were born, there was an incident.””
Lily’s face went pale.
“What incident?””
“A hospital record disappeared.””
Mark stepped forward.
“What kind of record?””
“The original birth report.””
I felt numb.
“And why would someone remove it?””
Susan looked toward the window.
“Because it contained the name of someone who wasn’t supposed to exist.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Susan whispered:
“Your grandfather’s son.””
Nobody spoke.
The words made no sense.
“My grandfather’s son?””
She nodded.
“The person listed as Lily’s biological father.””
Lily stared.
“That means…”
Susan looked at her.
“Your biological father is your grandfather’s son.””
The room exploded into silence.
No one moved.
No one knew what to say.
Because the truth was impossible.
Cruel.
Terrifying.
My father had not just hidden Lily’s past.
He had hidden his own connection to it.
And suddenly, the ring under Lily’s mattress made sense.
The secret visits.
The missing records.
The fear.
But one question remained.
May you like
Where was my father?
And what was he planning now?
