Chapter 6: The Husband Who Had His Own Secret

I stared at Rachel.

I waited for her to laugh.

To explain.

To say she had made a mistake.

Anything.

But she didn’t.

She just looked at me with sadness.

“No,” I whispered.

Mark’s face changed.

“Rachel.””

The way he said her name made my heart drop.

Because there was something in his voice.

Recognition.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“You know her?””

Mark didn’t answer.

That was all the answer I needed.

“Mark?””

He looked away.

For sixteen years, I had known this man.

I knew his favorite food.

The way he drank his coffee.

The sound of his laugh.

The tiny scar on his hand from when he broke a window as a teenager.

I thought I knew everything.

But suddenly, I realized I didn’t.

“Explain,” I whispered.

Mark took a breath.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Do not say my name like that.””

Lily sat silently, watching.

I could see her fear growing.

Mark looked broken.

“I didn’t know this would happen.””

“That’s not an explanation.””

Rachel stood up.

“I should let you two talk.””

“No,” I said.

My eyes stayed on Mark.

“Everyone has been keeping secrets from me.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to walk away.””

Mark closed his eyes.

Then he finally spoke.

“Before we adopted Lily…”

He stopped.

“Before we adopted Lily, I met Rachel.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Lily looked at him.

“Dad?””

Mark’s face filled with regret.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that before explaining something terrible.””

He looked at Rachel.

Then back at me.

“I was working with the adoption agency.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I was a volunteer coordinator.””

My mind raced.

“You never told me.””

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

“Not think it mattered?””

My voice rose.

“You knew Rachel?””

“I met her once.””

Rachel interrupted.

“More than once.””

Mark looked at her.

“Rachel…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“She deserves the truth.””

I felt like I was drowning.

“Keep going.””

Mark swallowed.

“When I met Rachel, she was trying to find someone to help her.””

“Help her?””

“With the adoption.””

My eyes narrowed.

“And my father?””

“He was involved.””

“Of course he was.””

I felt tears burning.

Everyone was involved.

Everyone except me.

Mark continued.

“I saw something was wrong.””

“What?””

“The paperwork.””

“What about it?””

“It didn’t look right.””

My heart pounded.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Sixteen years ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I stepped back.

“Protecting me?””

He nodded.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at Lily.

“Of losing her.””

That answer stopped me.

Because I understood.

He wasn’t talking about himself.

He was talking about our daughter.

“I found out there were questions about the adoption,” he said.

“But?””

“But your father convinced me everything was legal.””

I stared at him.

“You believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

The honesty hurt more.

Because I knew that feeling.

I had wanted to believe him too.

Mark continued.

“Years later, I found out he had hidden information.””

“Why didn’t you tell me then?””

He looked at Lily.

“Because by then, she was our daughter.””

I whispered:

“She was always our daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid the truth would destroy her.””

Nobody spoke.

Because maybe that was the cruelest part.

Everyone had claimed they were protecting Lily.

But nobody asked what Lily wanted.

Nobody asked what she needed.

She finally stood.

“I need air.””

“Lily—”

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I need to be alone.””

She walked outside.

I watched her through the window.

My sixteen-year-old daughter.

Pregnant.

Confused.

Surrounded by secrets she never created.

Rachel approached quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For all of this.””

I shook my head.

“This started before any of us.””

She nodded.

Then she reached into her bag.

“I have one more thing.””

I looked at the envelope she held.

“What is that?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

She hesitated.

“From Lily’s biological father.””

My breath caught.

“You said you didn’t know who he was.””

“I didn’t.””

She handed me the envelope.

“Not until this arrived.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

No signature.

Only one sentence.

*Tell her I never stopped looking for my daughter.*

I looked up.

Rachel was crying.

Mark looked terrified.

And outside, through the window, Lily stood frozen.

Because she had heard everything.

And she had one question.

May you like

A question none of us were ready to answer.

“Who is my father?”” she whispered.
