Chapter 11: The Man Who Held My Family’s Missing Years

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The silence was unbearable.

Thomas.

The man who had existed only as a shadow in old documents and hidden photographs.

The man my father had spent years trying to erase.

He was alive.

And he knew everything.

I wanted answers immediately.

I wanted to find him.

I wanted to demand the truth from the person who had watched my family collapse from the outside.

But fear held me back.

Because every person connected to this story had brought more questions.

More pain.

More secrets.

The next morning, Thomas sent an address.

An abandoned farmhouse outside the city.

Mark insisted on coming.

Rachel came too.

And Lily.

I didn’t want her there.

Not because I wanted to hide the truth.

Because I wanted to protect her.

But Lily looked me in the eyes and said something I couldn’t argue with.

“I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.””

She was right.

Everyone had made choices for her.

Everyone except her.

So we went together.

The farmhouse looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Old wooden walls.

A place forgotten by time.

But when we entered, we found evidence someone had been living there.

A table.

Documents.

Photographs.

And in the middle of the room…

Thomas.

He looked older than my father.

Tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden.

He looked at Lily.

And tears filled his eyes.

“You look just like her.””

Lily didn’t move.

“Who?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Your grandmother.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father never told you about his mother?””

“No.””

“Of course he didn’t.””

He sat down.

“Everything started with her.””

I stepped forward.

“Start explaining.””

Thomas nodded.

“I worked with your father for twenty years.””

Rachel looked away.

“I know.””

Thomas continued.

“We helped arrange private adoptions.””

My stomach tightened.

“Were they illegal?””

He looked down.

“Some were.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Money.””

One word.

The same answer behind so many betrayals.

Thomas continued.

“Your father discovered wealthy families would pay enormous amounts for certain children.””

I felt sick.

“They were buying babies?””

Thomas nodded.

“Not officially.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And Lily?””

“She was different.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Because she was connected to the Davis family.””

I frowned.

“She is the Davis family.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Not the family you know.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas opened a folder.

Inside was an old family tree.

My father’s family.

Names I recognized.

Then one name stood out.

A woman.

My grandmother.

Under her name was another child.

A child I had never heard of.

A child who had disappeared.

Thomas pointed.

“Your father had a sister.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She had a daughter.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Rachel’s mother.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“Wait.””

I looked between Rachel and Thomas.

“Are you saying…”

Thomas nodded.

“Lily’s biological mother was connected to your father’s family.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth was too complicated.

Too painful.

Thomas continued.

“Your father discovered that Lily was the last living connection to an inheritance.””

My eyes widened.

“So he arranged everything.””

“Yes.””

“He manipulated the adoption.””

“Yes.””

“He hid Rachel.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Because if Lily was legally connected to your father’s family, she would inherit everything.””

The room froze.

Money.

That was the reason.

Not love.

Not protection.

Money.

My father had destroyed lives over money.

But then Thomas said something else.

Something that changed everything.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your father wasn’t the only one who knew.””

My heart sank.

“Who else?””

Thomas looked at Mark.

The room went silent.

Mark’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You knew.””

I turned slowly.

“Mark?””

My husband looked terrified.

“I can explain.””

The words felt like a knife.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another person.

Another betrayal.

“How long?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Six years.””

My heart broke.

“Six years?””

“I found out something was wrong.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was trying to fix it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone is always trying to fix things.””

Mark stepped toward me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You knew.””

He looked destroyed.

“I didn’t know the whole truth.””

“But you knew enough.””

Silence.

And then Thomas said the words that changed everything.

“Mark didn’t just know.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“He helped your father hide it.””
