Chapter 5: The Truth Rachel Tried To Bury
Rachel didn’t invite us inside immediately.
She just stood there, gripping the door like she was afraid someone would appear behind us.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily stepped forward.
“Are you my mother?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
The question seemed to break something inside her.
“Yes.””
One word.
One simple word.
But it changed everything.
Lily looked down.
I watched my daughter struggle with emotions she couldn’t explain.
She had spent sixteen years knowing she was adopted.
But knowing was different from standing in front of the person who gave her life.
“I thought you were dead,” Lily whispered.
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Mark.
Then back at Lily.
“Because that’s what I was told.””
My heart tightened.
“Told by who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
We already knew.
“My father,” I said.
Rachel nodded.
“He told me you were the safest person to raise her.””
I froze.
“What?””
Rachel stepped away from the door.
“Come inside.””
The house smelled like old books and coffee.
A normal house.
A peaceful house.
It was strange how much normality surrounded so much pain.
Rachel sat across from us.
Her hands shook.
“I was seventeen when I had Lily.””
Lily looked at her.
“I was young. Scared. Alone.””
She swallowed.
“My parents wanted nothing to do with me. I had nowhere to go.””
“And my father?””
Rachel looked down.
“He found me.””
The room became silent.
“He said he could help.””
My stomach twisted.
“He told me he knew a family who would love my baby.””
Rachel nodded.
“He said he would make sure Lily had a good life.””
“And he did.””
Rachel looked at me.
“But not the way you think.””
The words hit me.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t just help with the adoption.””
She paused.
“He controlled it.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“He chose the family.””
My eyes widened.
“He chose us?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My entire world.
Rachel continued.
“He told me your family was perfect.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me sadly.
“He talked about you often.””
My heart hurt.
Because that almost sounded kind.
Almost.
“He said you were desperate to become a mother.””
I swallowed.
“That’s true.””
“He said you would do anything to protect Lily.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“Because I would.””
Rachel nodded.
“I believed him.””
“Then why hide all this?””
Rachel’s face changed.
“Because I found out he wasn’t helping me.””
“What do you mean?””
“He was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Rachel looked directly at Lily.
“Of people finding out who Lily’s biological father was.””
The room went completely still.
Lily’s face turned pale.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
The answer shocked me.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“I was never told.””
“But you must have known who it was.””
“I thought I did.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Until your father showed up.””
My heart raced.
“Explain.””
Rachel looked toward the window.
“He told me Lily’s father was dangerous.””
“What kind of dangerous?””
“He wouldn’t say.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was seventeen.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was scared.””
Nobody blamed her.
How could we?
She was a child herself.
A frightened teenager trying to survive.
“What happened after the adoption?””
Rachel looked at Lily.
“I tried to contact you.””
Lily froze.
“What?””
“I sent letters.””
My breathing stopped.
“What letters?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Your father intercepted them.””
I felt sick.
“All these years…”
“He made sure you never knew.””
Lily started crying.
Rachel cried too.
And watching them broke something inside me.
Two people who should have known each other.
Separated by someone else’s choices.
Then Rachel said something that changed the direction of everything.
“Your father didn’t leave because he was guilty.””
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
“Because he knew someone else was looking for Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Rachel reached into a drawer.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I received this two weeks ago.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“A warning.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
*Stop searching for the truth.*
I looked at Rachel.
“Who sent this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Mark stood up.
“We need to leave.””
But before we could move, Rachel grabbed my arm.
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who knew.””
My heart sank.
“Who else?””
Rachel whispered:
May you like
“Your husband.””
I felt the world stop.
