Chapter 7: The Man Who Claimed He Was My Daughter’s Father

The question hung in the air.

“Who is my father?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It was as if those five words had frozen the entire room.

Lily stood near the doorway, her face pale, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and anger.

She had spent her entire life believing one story.

She was a child who had been adopted by two people who desperately wanted her.

She was loved.

She was chosen.

That was the truth she knew.

Now, in less than a week, everything had been ripped apart.

Her adoption had secrets.

Her grandfather had lied.

Her biological mother had been hidden.

And now there was a man somewhere claiming he was her father.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to tell her that none of this changed anything.

That she was still my daughter.

But I knew something.

Words were not enough anymore.

Too many people had used words to hide the truth.

“I don’t know,” Rachel finally whispered.

Lily looked at her.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“I mean I never knew for certain.””

“But someone knows.””

Her voice cracked.

“Someone always knows.””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew who she meant.

My father.

The man who had controlled every part of the story.

The man who had disappeared the moment the truth started coming out.

I looked at Mark.

“What do we do now?””

Before he could answer, Rachel’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

“What?””

I noticed her hands shaking.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she picked up.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched her.

At first, she listened silently.

Then her expression turned into fear.

“No, you don’t understand.””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“You shouldn’t have called me.””

My heart started racing.

“Who is it?””

Rachel slowly moved the phone away.

Her lips trembled.

“He says he’s Lily’s father.””

The room went silent.

Lily stepped forward.

“He’s on the phone?””

Rachel nodded.

Lily stared at the device.

“I want to talk to him.””

“Lily, wait—”

“No.””

Her voice was stronger than I expected.

“I deserve answers.””

I looked at my daughter.

Sixteen years old.

But in that moment, she looked older.

Like life had forced her to grow up overnight.

Rachel hesitated.

Then handed her the phone.

Lily lifted it slowly.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

I couldn’t hear his words.

Only Lily’s reactions.

Her face changed.

First confusion.

Then sadness.

Then anger.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?””

Silence.

She listened.

“Because you say so?””

Her voice became sharper.

“No. Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

A pause.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””

My heart broke.

I reached for her hand.

She held it tightly.

After several minutes, she lowered the phone.

“He wants to meet.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Mark asked:

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“No?””

I stood.

“My daughter is not meeting a stranger alone.””

“He’s not a stranger,” Lily said quietly.

I looked at her.

“He’s your biological father.””

She looked down.

“But he’s still a stranger.””

That sentence hurt because it was true.

Blood did not create a relationship.

Love did.

And this man had missed sixteen years.

The next day, we met him in a small coffee shop.

I barely slept the night before.

My mind kept imagining every possible scenario.

A liar.

A dangerous person.

Someone trying to use Lily.

Someone connected to my father.

When the man walked in, I immediately noticed something.

He looked nervous.

Not confident.

Not threatening.

Just nervous.

He stopped when he saw Lily.

For a moment, he didn’t move.

Then tears filled his eyes.

“Oh my God.””

Lily stared at him.

The man looked at me.

Then at Mark.

Then back at Lily.

“I’m sorry.””

Those were his first words.

Not hello.

Not an explanation.

Just:

“I’m sorry.””

Lily remained silent.

The man sat down across from her.

“My name is Daniel.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“I’ve wanted to meet you for years.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His face fell.

Because he knew that was the question he deserved.

“Because I was told you didn’t want me.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Rachel.

Then back at Lily.

“Your grandfather told me Rachel gave you up and moved on.””

Rachel immediately stood.

“That’s a lie.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know that now.””

My hands tightened around my coffee cup.

“How did you find out?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your father contacted me.””

Everyone froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

My stomach turned.

Three weeks.

That was before Lily’s pregnancy was discovered.

Before the ultrasound.

Before everything exploded.

“What did he want?”” I asked.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“He wanted money.””

The word shocked me.

“What?””

“He said he had information about my daughter.””

Rachel looked furious.

“He was blackmailing you?””

Daniel nodded.

“He said if I wanted to know the truth, I had to pay.””

I felt sick.

My father.

The man I loved.

The man I trusted.

He wasn’t protecting anyone.

He was controlling everyone.

“What did you do?””

“I paid.””

Silence.

“How much?””

Daniel looked away.

“A lot.””

“And then?””

“He gave me a location.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Your daughter’s school.””

Everyone went still.

“What?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He had been watching her.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“No.””

Daniel nodded sadly.

“He knew where she was. Who she spent time with. Your family schedule.””

My breathing became difficult.

The thought of my father watching Lily without us knowing made me feel sick.

Lily looked terrified.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because he knew something was coming.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Because he knew your biological father would eventually find you.””

Lily stared.

“And that’s you?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why did Grandpa care?””

Nobody answered.

Until Daniel said:

“Because your grandfather knew a secret about your birth.””

“What secret?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this hidden in the documents he gave me.””

He handed it to Lily.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a copy of an old medical record.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Then widened.

“What?””

I grabbed her shoulder.

“What is it?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“My birth date.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

She looked at the paper.

“It’s wrong.””

The room went silent.

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather changed it.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why would he change her birth date?””

Nobody knew.

But one thing became clear.

My father hadn’t just hidden information.

He had rewritten history.

May you like

And whatever he was hiding…

It was bigger than any of us imagined.
