Chapter 10: The Photograph That Revealed The Impossible
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
Four months before Lily was born.
That date kept repeating in my mind.
Four months.
Before my daughter entered this world, my father was already holding her.
Already involved.
Already hiding something.
But the thing that disturbed me most wasn’t the photograph.
It was the man standing beside him.
The man whose face was partially hidden.
The man wearing the same gold ring.
The same ring that had been hidden beneath Lily’s mattress.
A ring my father had given her.
A ring that now felt like a warning.
“Who is that?”” Lily whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Or maybe because someone did.
I looked at Mark.
“Did you ever see this picture before?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Rachel stepped closer to the screen.
Her face changed.
Not with confusion.
With recognition.
“Rachel?””
She didn’t respond.
She stared at the photograph like she was seeing a ghost.
“You know him.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I thought he was gone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who is he?””
Rachel sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“His name was Thomas.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way she said it told me everything.
“Who was Thomas?””
Rachel looked at Lily.
“Your grandfather’s partner.””
I frowned.
“Partner in what?””
She swallowed.
“Everything.””
The room became silent.
“Explain.””
Rachel looked exhausted.
“Your father wasn’t working alone.””
My heart sank.
“Working on what?””
She looked at the picture again.
“Creating families.””
The words sounded harmless.
But they weren’t.
Not with everything we knew.
“He controlled private adoptions,” Rachel continued.
“He found young mothers. He found families who wanted children. He connected them.””
“That sounds like an adoption service.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice dropped.
“It was something else.””
Mark stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel looked at him.
“I’m saying your father wasn’t helping people adopt.””
She looked at me.
“He was choosing who got children.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you knew him.””
“I knew the person he pretended to be.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because wasn’t that true of all of us?
We all thought we knew my father.
Rachel continued.
“Thomas handled the records.””
My heart stopped.
“The adoption records?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did my father take them?””
“Because Thomas knew where the original files were.””
I looked at Lily.
“Original files?””
Rachel nodded.
“The real ones.””
The ones that had been changed.
The ones that had disappeared.
The ones my father had spent years hiding.
I stood up.
“We need to find Thomas.””
Nobody disagreed.
The problem was finding someone who had disappeared years ago.
Susan, the investigator, returned later that evening with more information.
Apparently, she had been searching for Thomas after my father vanished.
“He disappeared seven years ago,” she said.
“Where?””
“Unknown.””
“Dead?””
She shook her head.
“No proof.””
I looked at her.
“What did my father know?””
Susan hesitated.
“That Thomas was planning to expose everything.””
My heart raced.
“Expose what?””
She placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
Names.
Dates.
Adoption records.
My hands shook as I flipped through them.
Then I saw it.
A name.
A familiar name.
My father’s.
And beneath it…
Lily’s.
But not as my daughter.
As a file number.
A case.
Like she was an object.
I felt tears forming.
“They treated her like paperwork.””
Susan looked down.
“That’s why your father was afraid.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He knew if those records became public, everyone involved would be destroyed.””
Including him.
The truth became clearer.
My father wasn’t running because he wanted to protect Lily.
He was running because he wanted to protect himself.
But there was still one mystery.
Why Lily?
Why had he chosen her?
Susan opened another document.
“This was found in Thomas’s old office.””
She handed me a page.
At the top was a handwritten note.
*Subject: Elizabeth Monroe.*
Rachel froze.
“That’s my mother’s name.””
Susan nodded.
“The file wasn’t about Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was it about?””
She looked at Lily.
“It was about her family.””
I read the document carefully.
The words blurred.
Then one sentence caught my attention.
*The child must remain hidden until the inheritance issue is resolved.*
Inheritance.
I looked up.
“What inheritance?””
Nobody knew.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Your father’s family.””
My stomach turned.
“My father’s family?””
She nodded.
“Your father came from a wealthy family.””
I frowned.
“He never talked about that.””
“Because he lost it.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at Lily.
“Because of a child.””
The room became silent.
“What child?””
Rachel looked at her.
“You.””
Lily stepped back.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
Rachel looked devastated.
“But your grandfather believed you were connected to something that belonged to his family.””
My head was spinning.
“My father manipulated an adoption because of money?””
Susan nodded.
“That’s what the documents suggest.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The person everyone had lied about.
The person everyone had used.
And suddenly, I understood something.
The pregnancy.
The ultrasound.
The secret.
It wasn’t the beginning of the story.
It was the moment the truth finally forced itself into the light.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
“Who is this?””
A voice finally came.
A voice I had never heard before.
But one I would never forget.
“Emily.””
I froze.
Because the person on the phone knew my name.
“I have the answer you’re looking for.””
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Thomas.””
The room went completely silent.
“I know what your father did.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“Not far.””
Then he said:
“But before you find me, you need to know something.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
His voice became quieter.
“Your father didn’t steal Lily’s life.””
A chill went through me.
May you like
“He stole yours.””
The call ended.
