Chapter 13: The Final Secret My Father Tried To Take To His Grave
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
We all stared at the photograph lying on the table.
The image was blurry.
Grainy.
But there was no mistaking the figure in the reflection.
My father.
After everything.
After running away.
After stealing records.
After hiding for days.
He was still there.
Watching.
Waiting.
I felt anger rise through every part of me.
Not fear.
Not anymore.
Fear was what allowed him to control everyone for years.
Fear was what kept secrets alive.
But I was done being afraid.
“He’s been following us,” Mark whispered.
I looked at him.
“Don’t say that like you’re surprised.””
His face fell.
Because he knew I was right.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
And I was the only person who had been left in the dark.
Thomas studied the photograph carefully.
“He knew we were close.””
“How?””
Thomas looked at the image.
“Because someone told him.””
My eyes moved toward Mark.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I didn’t say anything.
I didn’t accuse him.
But the thought was there.
After all, trust was something that had been destroyed piece by piece.
“I didn’t tell him,” Mark said quietly.
I looked away.
“I want to believe you.””
The words hurt both of us.
Because once, I wouldn’t have needed to say that.
Once, believing him was automatic.
Now it was something I had to choose.
Thomas placed the photograph down.
“There’s only one reason your father would stay close.””
“What?””
“He wants something.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Money?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That told me enough.
The inheritance.
The family fortune.
The thing that had started all of this.
My daughter had been treated like a key to a locked door.
A person reduced to a piece of property.
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting quietly.
Too quietly.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“I’m okay.””
I knew that wasn’t true.
But she continued.
“I just want this to end.””
And that was the one thing everyone in that room wanted.
Not revenge.
Not punishment.
Just an ending.
Thomas agreed to contact my father.
Not because he trusted him.
Because he knew how my father thought.
“He won’t come if he thinks he’s losing control,” Thomas said.
“So what do we do?””
“We give him what he wants.””
I hated the idea.
“What does he want?””
Thomas looked at Lily.
“Her.””
The room became silent.
“No.””
My voice came out immediately.
“No one uses my daughter again.””
Thomas nodded.
“I know.””
“Then find another way.””
He looked at me carefully.
“Emily, your father spent thirty years controlling this story. The only way to beat someone like him is to make him believe he’s still in control.””
I didn’t like it.
But I understood.
The meeting was arranged for the following evening.
A private location.
An old family property that had belonged to my father’s parents.
The place where, according to Thomas, everything began.
I hated driving there.
Every mile felt like moving closer to a part of my father I didn’t know.
The house was enormous.
Old.
Beautiful.
And empty.
The kind of place where secrets could survive.
My father was already there.
Standing in the doorway.
When I saw him, my first reaction wasn’t anger.
It was sadness.
Because I saw the man who raised me.
The man who held me when I cried as a child.
The man who taught me everything I knew.
And then I saw the stranger behind that memory.
“You look tired, Emily.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what you have to say?””
He looked down.
“I know you’re angry.””
“Angry?””
I stepped closer.
“You destroyed my family.””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
His eyes moved toward Lily.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Lily.””
She stared at him.
“You lied to me.””
His face broke slightly.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
Silence.
My father looked older than I had ever seen him.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices.””
He looked away.
Because he knew.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Tell them the truth.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t owe you anything.””
“You owe Lily.””
That was the first time I saw anger in his face.
Real anger.
“She was never supposed to know.””
The words made everyone freeze.
Lily stared.
“What?””
My father immediately looked regretful.
But it was too late.
“What do you mean?””
He closed his eyes.
“The truth was supposed to come out differently.””
“What truth?””
He looked at Lily.
“You were never adopted because your parents couldn’t have children.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“You were chosen.””
The words were like a slap.
“Chosen?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“By your grandmother.””
Nobody moved.
“My grandmother?””
He nodded.
“She knew Lily’s bloodline.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“That’s not the whole truth.””
My father glared at him.
“You always wanted to destroy everything.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No. I wanted the truth.””
My father looked back at Lily.
“Your biological mother was part of our family.””
“I know.””
His expression changed.
“You know?””
Rachel nodded.
“And we know about the inheritance.””
My father became silent.
Then he whispered:
“So you found everything.””
“Yes,” I said.
“And now you’re going to tell us the rest.””
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he sat down.
“I never wanted this.””
Nobody believed him.
But he continued.
“When your grandmother died, she left everything to one person.””
He looked at Lily.
“Her first granddaughter.””
Lily frowned.
“But why hide that?””
“Because your existence threatened someone.””
“Who?””
My father looked toward the dark window.
Then he said:
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“Your brother?””
He nodded.
“He believed he deserved the inheritance.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“He was supposed to be gone.””
My father’s expression became grim.
“He was never gone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who is he?””
My father looked directly at Lily.
“The person who has been watching you.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then my father whispered:
“Your uncle is the reason I ran.””
