Chapter 9: The Woman Behind The Whole Lie

The police took Maya’s statement carefully.

Slowly.

Without pressure.

They didn’t ask leading questions.

They didn’t tell her what to say.

They let her tell the story in her own words.

And what she said changed everything.

“I was upstairs.””

Maya stared at the blanket.

“Mommy told me to stay in the bedroom.””

“Why?””

“She said grown-up problems were happening.””

The investigator nodded.

“Did you listen?””

“Yes.””

“What happened next?””

Maya swallowed.

“I heard yelling.””

“Who was yelling?””

“Mommy.””

“Who else?””

She whispered:

“Emily.””

“And then?””

“I heard Grandma.””

The investigator looked up.

“Your grandmother?””

Maya nodded.

“She was angry.””

“What did she say?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“She said Emily ruined everything.””

My stomach twisted.

“What happened after that?””

“I came out because I was scared.””

“Maya, what did you see?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emily was standing near the stairs.””

A pause.

“Mommy was crying.””

Another pause.

“And Grandma pushed her.””

The room went silent.

Claire covered her face.

The investigator looked serious.

“Are you sure?””

Maya nodded.

“I saw it.””

“What happened after?””

“Mommy screamed.””

“Then?””

“Grandma told Mommy what to do.””

“What did she say?””

Maya whispered:

“She said…”

Her voice broke.

“She said, ‘Now we fix this.’”

I closed my eyes.

The words hurt.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Claire wasn’t the mastermind.

She was part of something bigger.

A secret passed from one generation to another.

A family that protected itself at any cost.

After Maya finished, the investigator left.

Claire stayed behind.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she said:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

Those words meant nothing now.

“You knew.””

She cried.

“I knew my mother pushed Emily.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

“You let me believe Emily was dead.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was trapped.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

She looked broken.

“Yes.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I did.””

That was the first real truth she had given me.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just the truth.

Then the door opened.

The investigator stepped back inside.

“Mr. Carter.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at Claire.

“We found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He held up a folder.

“Your mother-in-law has been located.””

I stared.

“Where?””

“She left town yesterday.””

Claire went pale.

The investigator continued.

“But we also found something else.””

“What?””

He opened the folder.

“Records showing financial transfers.””

“To who?””

He looked at me.

“Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Your sister-in-law has been receiving money for the past year.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

The investigator looked serious.

“Mr. Carter.””

He placed the documents on the table.

“Emily wasn’t hiding from Claire.””

I looked down.

“She was hiding from someone else.””

“Who?””

The investigator pointed to the signature on the transfers.

The name at the bottom.

A name I recognized.

A name that made Claire start crying.

Because it belonged to someone we trusted.

Someone who had been around Maya her entire life.

Someone who had helped raise her.

The investigator said:

“The person paying Emily…”

May you like

He paused.

“Was your own father.””
