Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Inside the Backpack
Maya woke up the next morning with a small smile.
“Daddy.””
I leaned forward.
“Hey, princess.””
Her voice was weak.
“Did they fix me?””
I smiled.
“They did.””
“Am I still broken?””
My heart cracked.
“No.””
I brushed her hair away.
“You were never broken.””
She looked relieved.
Then her eyes moved around the room.
Searching.
For someone.
I knew who.
“Mommy went home to get clothes,” I said.
Maya’s smile disappeared.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
“You don’t have to see her if you don’t want to.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
And immediately, I regretted them.
Because I was her father.
I wasn’t supposed to put ideas in her head.
I wasn’t supposed to create distance between a child and her mother.
But something had happened.
Something I couldn’t ignore.
Maya looked at me carefully.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you mad at Mommy?””
I paused.
“No.””
It was the truth.
I wasn’t mad.
Not yet.
I was confused.
“Why?””
“Because you look mad.””
I forced a smile.
“I’m just worried.””
She looked down.
Then she whispered,
“Can I have my backpack?””
My chest tightened.
“Why do you need it?””
She hesitated.
“I need something inside.””
“What?””
She looked toward the door.
Making sure nobody was there.
Then she lowered her voice.
“The blue envelope.””
I stared at her.
“What blue envelope?””
Her fingers grabbed the blanket.
“The one Mommy doesn’t know about.””
Everything inside me went still.
“What envelope?””
Maya didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked terrified that she had already said too much.
“Maya.””
She shook her head.
“I shouldn’t have told you.””
“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Mommy said if I told anyone, Daddy would get angry.””
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
“Why would I get angry?””
Maya started crying.
“I don’t know.””
I grabbed her hand.
“Look at me.””
She did.
“I will never be angry because you tell me the truth.””
She wiped her face.
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered,
“Mommy said some things are only for grown-ups.””
I looked at the purple backpack sitting on the chair.
“What’s in the envelope?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She made me keep it.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Who made you keep it?””
Maya looked toward the door again.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Mommy.””
A few hours later, when Maya was asleep, I took the backpack to the waiting area.
My hands felt strangely heavy.
Like I already knew I was about to find something I couldn’t forget.
I opened the zipper.
Inside were normal things.
A small notebook.
Colored pencils.
A stuffed rabbit.
A water bottle.
A snack wrapper.
Then I found it.
A blue envelope.
No name.
No writing.
Just sealed shut.
I looked around.
Nobody was watching.
My fingers touched the edge.
Then stopped.
Because opening it felt like crossing a line.
This was my daughter’s privacy.
But then I remembered her words.
Mommy made me keep it.
I opened it.
Inside were several printed pages.
The first one made my blood run cold.
It was a photograph.
Of Maya.
Taken inside our house.
While she was sleeping.
I stared at it.
Then flipped to the next page.
Another picture.
Maya sitting at the kitchen table.
Another.
Maya crying.
My hands started shaking.
At the bottom of each photo was a date.
And then I saw the newest one.
Taken three days earlier.
Maya standing in the hallway.
Holding her purple backpack.
And behind her...
Claire.
Watching.
I dropped the photo.
A thousand explanations ran through my mind.
None of them made sense.
Then I found a folded piece of paper.
A handwritten note.
The handwriting was Claire’s.
I knew it immediately.
My wife had written:
“Daniel can never know what happened.””
I stopped breathing.
Because beneath that sentence was another.
One that made my entire world collapse.
“She will tell him if she remembers.””
I read it again.
And again.
She.
Not Maya.
Not our daughter.
She.
Like Claire wasn’t talking about a child.
Like she was talking about a threat.
A sound behind me made me turn.
“Daniel?””
I spun around.
Claire stood there.
Her face had gone pale.
She was staring at the open backpack.
At the photos.
At the note in my hand.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then she whispered,
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
My grip tightened around the paper.
“What did you do, Claire?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
And then she said something I would never forget.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From who?””
Claire looked toward Maya’s hospital room.
Then back at me.
“From the person who hurt her.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Claire opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, a nurse rushed past us.
“Mr. Carter!””
I turned.
“What happened?””
The nurse’s face was serious.
“It’s Maya.””
My heart stopped.
“She woke up.””
A pause.
“And she’s asking for you.””
I ran.
But as I reached the door, I heard Maya crying.
And one sentence.
One sentence that changed everything.
“Daddy…”
May you like
Her voice broke.
“Mommy wasn’t the one I was scared of.””
