Chapter 14: The Truth About Maya

I stared at Evelyn.

The words didn’t make sense.

“What did you say?””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“You heard me.””

My daughter grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I ignored the fear in Evelyn’s eyes.

I ignored everything except Maya.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Your father never told you.””

“Told me what?””

“That Maya’s birth was not as simple as you believe.””

My heart started pounding.

I looked at Maya.

She looked terrified.

Not because she understood.

Because she didn’t.

And that made me angrier.

“You don’t get to do this.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Do what?””

“Bring my daughter into your secrets.””

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“I’m trying to tell you the truth.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re trying to hurt people.””

A noise came from behind me.

Claire.

She stood in the doorway.

I turned.

“You followed me?””

She ignored me.

She looked at her mother.

“Stop.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Claire.””

“No.””

Claire walked inside.

“You’ve done enough.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn laughed quietly.

“Look at you.””

“What?””

“Finally standing up.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I should have done it years ago.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn nodded.

“You should have.””

The guilt in Claire’s face was painful.

“I was afraid.””

“You were weak.””

Claire flinched.

But then something changed.

She looked at Maya.

And then back at her mother.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I was scared.””

A pause.

“But I’m not anymore.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“You think Daniel will forgive you?””

Claire looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Then she looked at Maya.

“But she deserves the truth.””

I didn’t know what to feel.

Because despite everything…

This was the first time Claire had chosen Maya over fear.

“Tell him,” Evelyn said.

Everyone looked at her.

“Tell him everything.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Maya was born after a miscarriage.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“Before Maya, I lost a pregnancy.””

I remembered.

The sadness.

The hospital.

The months of trying again.

“Then what?””

“Then I got pregnant again.””

She swallowed.

“But there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

“My mother was involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“She convinced me to hide something.””

“Hide what?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“The hospital made a mistake.””

I waited.

“The records were mixed.””

The room became silent.

“What records?””

Claire whispered:

“Birth records.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

Claire cried.

“Maya is still your daughter.””

That sentence terrified me.

Because it meant there was something I didn’t know.

“What are you saying?””

Claire looked at me.

“She was born through an embryo donation.””

I froze.

The world became quiet.

“What?””

“My mother arranged it.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted control.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter.

The little girl who loved pancakes.

The little girl who held my hand when I was sick.

The little girl who called me Daddy.

None of that changed.

But the secret still hurt.

“Who is her biological mother?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily entered the room.

Behind her was Richard.

But this time, he wasn’t holding anything.

He looked defeated.

Emily said:

“I am.””

The words shattered the room.

I stared.

“What?””

Emily looked at Maya.

“I was the donor.””

My breathing stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It’s the truth.””

Maya looked confused.

“Daddy?””

I immediately went to her.

I held her.

“You are my daughter.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The simplicity of her answer destroyed me.

She didn’t care about biology.

She cared about love.

Emily watched us.

“My sister knew.””

Claire looked down.

“She used it against me.””

“She threatened to reveal it.””

“Yes.””

Emily looked at me.

“That’s why she controlled everyone.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“You knew all along?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The police arrived minutes later.

Evelyn was arrested.

Richard was taken for questioning.

And for the first time in a year…

The truth was finally out.

But as I held Maya that night, I realized something.

Secrets didn’t disappear when they were revealed.

May you like

They left scars.

And we still had to learn how to heal.
