Chapter 6: The Evidence That Changed Everything

The police arrived at the hospital that evening.

Not because I called them.

Because the hospital did.

A social worker had spoken with Maya.

The nurse had reported the backpack.

And once someone mentioned the words “child afraid of parent,” everything moved quickly.

Claire sat across from the investigator.

Her hands were shaking.

I stood near the window.

Watching my wife answer questions about our family.

About our home.

About our daughter.

It felt unreal.

“Mrs. Carter,” the investigator said, “did you place the blue envelope inside your daughter’s backpack?””

Claire was silent.

Then:

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

The investigator continued.

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“I wanted Daniel to know the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Of losing Maya.””

The investigator wrote something down.

“What truth were you trying to reveal?””

Claire looked toward Maya’s room.

“Emily’s death wasn’t an accident.””

The room went completely still.

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“Emily didn’t fall.””

My voice was barely there.

“Then what happened?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Maya saw.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she see?””

Claire whispered:

“She saw me arguing with Emily.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

I stared.

“Me?””

Claire nodded.

“Emily found out I had lied to you.””

“About what?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“About Maya.””

The words made no sense.

“What does that mean?””

Claire cried.

“Maya wasn’t supposed to be with us that night.””

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What?””

“Emily was going to tell you something.””

“What?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“She said Maya wasn’t safe with me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The investigator leaned forward.

“Mrs. Carter, what happened next?””

Claire’s voice became a whisper.

“We fought.””

“And?””

“Emily slipped.””

My heart raced.

“Did you push her?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

“I didn’t push her.””

The investigator watched her carefully.

“What did Maya see?””

Claire looked toward the hospital room.

“She saw Emily fall.””

I closed my eyes.

Then why had Maya been afraid?

Why had she blamed her mother?

Why had she hidden the envelope?

A thought entered my mind.

A terrible thought.

“What happened after Emily fell?””

Claire started crying.

“I panicked.””

“What did you do?””

“I told Maya to stay quiet.””

My fists tightened.

“You told an eight-year-old child to keep a secret about someone dying?””

“I was scared!””

“You scared her!””

Claire broke down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“She was scared because of me.””

The investigator looked at me.

Then at Claire.

“We need to speak with Maya again when she’s stable.””

I nodded.

But before they left, the investigator stopped.

“One more thing.””

He held up the blue envelope.

“There was another item inside.””

My eyes moved to it.

“What?””

He looked serious.

“A recording.””

My blood ran cold.

“A recording of what?””

The investigator glanced at Claire.

“Your wife’s conversation with her sister.””

Claire’s face went white.

“What?””

The investigator looked at me.

“And Mr. Carter…”

He paused.

“Your daughter wasn’t the only person who knew the truth.””

He held up the evidence bag.

“Someone else recorded everything.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

Not because she had been exposed.

Because she knew what was coming next.

And then my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice whispered:

“Daniel?””

I froze.

Because I recognized that voice.

It was impossible.

It couldn’t be real.

But it was.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“This is Emily.””

May you like

My entire body went numb.

Because Emily Carter had been dead for one year.
