Chapter 11: The House Where Everyone Lied

The old house looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The world had changed.

My family had shattered.

My daughter had been hurt.

But the house stood there quietly.

Like it hadn’t witnessed anything.

I walked inside.

The front door was unlocked.

“Claire?””

No answer.

I stepped further.

The memories attacked immediately.

Family dinners.

Christmas mornings.

Maya running through the hallway.

A happier version of us.

A version that never existed.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

Claire stood at the top of the stairs.

For a second, I saw my wife again.

Not the woman from the hospital.

Not the woman from the secrets.

Just Claire.

The woman I loved.

Then I remembered everything.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked exhausted.

“I wanted you to hear the truth from me.””

“You should have told me a year ago.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Shame is admitting what you did.””

She looked at me.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was a coward.””

I didn’t respond.

She walked downstairs slowly.

“I hated myself every day.””

“Then why keep lying?””

“Because every time I thought about telling you, I saw Maya.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“She was so little.””

My anger softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

Just softened.

“What happened that night?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“My mother came here.””

“And Emily?””

“She followed her.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That my mother had been manipulating me.””

I frowned.

“Manipulating you?””

Claire nodded.

“She convinced me that you would take Maya away.””

“Why would she say that?””

“Because she hated you.””

“Why?””

Claire hesitated.

Then:

“Because your father rejected her years ago.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“My mother was obsessed with your father.””

The pieces started connecting.

“My father?””

“She blamed him for ruining her life.””

I stared.

“So this was revenge?””

Claire shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

“She wanted control.””

Claire walked toward the stairs.

“She always wanted control.””

“Over you?””

“Yes.””

“Over Emily?””

“Yes.””

“Over Maya?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

“She saw Maya as something valuable.””

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire whispered:

“She thought Maya could keep our families connected.””

I felt disgusted.

“My daughter is not a tool.””

“I know.””

“Did she ever hurt Maya?””

Claire looked away.

The silence was terrifying.

“Claire.””

“No.””

The answer was weak.

“No, she never physically hurt her.””

“But?””

Claire swallowed.

“She scared her.””

I looked around the house.

“Where did Emily fall?””

Claire pointed.

“The stairs.””

I walked closer.

“Show me.””

Claire followed.

“She was standing here.””

She pointed.

“My mother was there.””

“Where were you?””

“Behind them.””

I looked up.

“And Maya?””

“Upstairs.””

I stared at the staircase.

“What happened next?””

Claire whispered:

“My mother pushed Emily.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because Emily was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Claire looked at me.

“That Maya wasn’t the only child she had manipulated.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She had done it before.””

My heart stopped.

“With who?””

Claire looked toward the basement door.

“Her own children.””

A sound came from below.

A floorboard.

I turned.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then the basement door slowly opened.

And a voice came from the darkness.

“You finally figured it out.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who shouldn’t have been here.

Someone who had disappeared.

Someone who knew every secret.

Emily stepped out of the basement.

Alive.

But not alone.

May you like

Someone was standing behind her.

Someone holding a weapon.
