Chapter 13: The Final Lie My Family Tried To Hide

The second I heard Maya’s voice, everything else disappeared.

Not Richard.

Not Emily.

Not Claire.

Not the secrets.

Only my daughter.

“Daddy, where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“I’m coming, sweetheart.””

“Daddy…”

“Yes?””

“Please hurry.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered:

“She found her.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

“My mother.””

The words made the room colder.

Richard lowered the weapon slightly.

For the first time, he looked worried.

That told me everything.

He wasn’t in control anymore.

“You need to leave,” Emily said.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She knows you’re here.””

“Who?””

“My mother.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Emily looked at her.

“Yes.””

Claire stepped back.

“No, she wouldn’t.””

“She would.””

I stared at both of them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Emily looked exhausted.

“Your daughter is the only person who can expose everything.””

I frowned.

“Expose what?””

“The truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“I’m tired of hearing that word.””

Emily looked at me.

“I know.””

She took a breath.

“So listen carefully.””

The house became silent.

“Your mother-in-law didn’t just hide Emily’s death.””

She looked at Claire.

“She controlled Claire for years.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“She threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With Maya.””

My fists tightened.

“How?””

Emily answered.

“She told Claire that if she didn’t follow her instructions, she would take Maya away.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you know your mother-in-law.””

I looked at Claire.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire cried.

“Because I believed her.””

I stared.

“She convinced me that you would never forgive me.””

“And you believed that?””

“Yes.””

The answer was heartbreaking.

Because it meant Claire knew me less than I thought.

Emily continued.

“But there was something Claire didn’t know.””

“What?””

“My mother wasn’t only trying to control her.””

Emily looked toward the door.

“She was trying to control Maya.””

A terrible silence followed.

I thought about the photos.

The questions.

The fear.

The backpack.

Everything.

Richard suddenly spoke.

“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””

Everyone looked at him.

Emily’s expression changed.

“You don’t get to talk.””

Richard smiled.

“You think you’re the hero now?””

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“I think I’m the person who survived.””

I stepped between them.

“Where is Maya?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily looked at Claire.

“She’s at the house.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Claire whispered:

“Because my mother took her.””

I grabbed my keys.

“I’m going.””

Richard moved.

Emily immediately stepped in front of him.

“No.””

He stared at her.

“You think you can stop me?””

“Yes.””

Something in her voice made him stop.

Not fear.

Determination.

I left before anyone could follow.

The drive felt endless.

Every red light.

Every car.

Every second.

It all felt like something standing between me and my daughter.

When I arrived, the front door was open.

The same house.

The same place where everything began.

But this time, I wasn’t walking into memories.

I was walking into danger.

“Maya?””

No answer.

I stepped inside.

Then I heard crying.

Upstairs.

I ran.

“Maya!””

I reached the bedroom.

And stopped.

My daughter was sitting on the floor.

Holding her purple backpack.

Beside her stood an elderly woman.

My mother-in-law.

Evelyn.

She looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was soft.

Like she wasn’t the reason my family had fallen apart.

“Step away from my daughter.””

She smiled.

“You sound just like your father.””

The anger inside me burned.

“Where is Maya?””

“She’s right here.””

Maya ran to me.

I grabbed her immediately.

She held onto me.

“I knew you’d come.””

I whispered:

“I always will.””

Evelyn watched us.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting her from.””

I stared at her.

“You.””

She smiled sadly.

“That’s what everyone thinks.””

“Because it’s true.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she said something unexpected.

“I loved Maya.””

My anger almost made me laugh.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

Her face changed.

A flicker of sadness.

“You think I wanted any of this?””

“You pushed Emily.””

“I made a mistake.””

The words stopped me.

Because she admitted it.

Just like Claire had.

“I never meant for Emily to fall.””

“But she did.””

“Yes.””

“And you covered it up.””

“Yes.””

Maya buried her face against me.

I held her tighter.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Because I was protecting my family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Maya.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Her expression hardened.

And for the first time, I saw the person behind the grandmother mask.

The person who had controlled everyone.

“You’re just like your father.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

“He always thought he was better than everyone.””

“My father helped Emily.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

“He did.””

“Then why did you hate him?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Because he knew the truth.””

A chill moved through me.

“What truth?””

She stepped closer.

“The truth about Maya.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What about Maya?””

Evelyn whispered:

“She isn’t the child you think she is.””

May you like

The room went silent.

And I felt my entire world shift again.
