Chapter 5: The Woman I Married Had Been Hiding The Past

I didn’t confront Claire immediately.

That surprised even me.

A part of me wanted to walk outside and demand answers.

I wanted to ask why my wife had hidden photos.

Why she had written those words.

Why our daughter was afraid.

But another part of me understood something.

Fear made people reckless.

And if Claire was hiding something, I needed the truth.

Not an argument.

Not an explosion.

The truth.

I left Maya’s room and found Claire sitting alone in the hallway.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like she had aged ten years overnight.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Is she okay?””

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I sat across from her.

“Tell me about Grandma’s house.””

Claire froze.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“What about it?””

“The night we left.””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“Tell me.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know what Maya said.””

“Don’t do that.””

“What?””

“Don’t avoid the question.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“I’m her mother.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it matters.””

“It does.””

I leaned forward.

“And that’s why I need to understand why our daughter is afraid of you.””

Her eyes filled.

“You think I hurt her.””

“I think you know more than you’re telling me.””

A long silence passed.

Finally, Claire whispered,

“I made a mistake.””

My heart sank.

“What mistake?””

She rubbed her forehead.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She looked at me.

“Something from before.””

“Before what?””

“Before you.””

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly I realized something.

There was an entire part of Claire’s life I didn’t know.

A door she had kept locked.

And somehow, our daughter had been standing near that door.

“Who fell that night?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I can’t.””

“Claire.””

“I can’t tell you here.””

“Why?””

“Because if I say it out loud, everything changes.””

I stared at her.

“Everything already changed.””

She looked broken.

But I couldn’t let that distract me.

Not anymore.

“Who was in Grandma’s house?””

Claire whispered,

“My sister.””

I felt confused.

“Your sister?””

Claire nodded.

“You never told me much about her.””

“Because she’s not part of my life anymore.””

“Why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because she died.””

The hallway became silent.

I had known Claire for ten years.

She had never mentioned having a sister.

Not once.

“What was her name?””

“Emily.””

“When did she die?””

Claire swallowed.

“One year ago.””

My stomach dropped.

One year ago.

The same night at my mother’s house.

“What happened?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She fell down the stairs.””

I couldn’t speak.

The words from Maya came back.

I fell.

Someone else fell.

My daughter had been telling the truth.

But not the whole truth.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Emily was angry.””

“At you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She found out something.””

“What?””

Claire looked away.

“Something I did.””

The answer felt like a knife.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

“I was leaving you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Before Emily died.””

My mind went blank.

“You were leaving me?””

She nodded.

“I thought our marriage was over.””

“Why?””

“Because I was unhappy.””

The pain in her voice almost made me feel sorry for her.

Almost.

“But what does that have to do with Emily?””

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

Claire wiped her face.

“That I had been planning to take Maya.””

I felt sick.

“Take her where?””

“Away.””

The word hung between us.

“You were going to leave with our daughter?””

“I thought I had a right.””

“She’s my daughter too.””

“I know.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily convinced me not to.””

I stared at her.

“Your sister knew?””

“Yes.””

“And then she died.””

Claire nodded.

I looked back toward Maya’s room.

“Did Maya see what happened?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stood.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

For the first time in ten years, I didn’t recognize my wife.

“What?””

“Please understand.””

“Understand what?””

“I was scared.””

“So was Maya.””

Claire broke down.

“I know.””

May you like

But those words didn’t comfort me.

Because a mother’s fear should never become a child’s nightmare.
