Chapter 8: The Recording That Exposed My Wife

The police technician arrived less than an hour later.

Nobody touched the memory card until it was secured.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Not even the investigator.

Everyone understood something important.

Whatever was on that card could change everything.

Maya watched from her bed.

She looked exhausted.

But she refused to sleep.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

“Yes?””

“Will Mommy go to jail?””

The question destroyed me.

Because children weren’t supposed to ask questions like that.

“I don’t know.””

She nodded.

Like she understood.

Like she had already accepted that the world wasn’t as safe as she thought.

The technician connected the card.

A single audio file appeared.

Created one year ago.

The investigator pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then voices.

Claire’s voice.

My wife’s voice.

“Emily, stop.””

My blood ran cold.

Then another voice.

Emily.

“You need to tell him.””

Claire:

“No.””

Emily:

“He deserves to know.””

Claire:

“You don’t understand.””

Emily:

“I understand perfectly.””

The recording continued.

The room felt smaller with every second.

Emily’s voice became sharper.

“You lied to Daniel.””

Claire:

“I made a mistake.””

Emily:

“You planned to take his daughter away.””

Claire:

“I was scared.””

Emily:

“You were angry.””

A long pause.

Then Emily said something that made me freeze.

“You weren’t protecting Maya. You were punishing Daniel.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

The recording continued.

Claire’s voice shook.

“He doesn’t appreciate what I do.””

Emily:

“So you were going to disappear with his child?””

Claire:

“I’m her mother.””

Emily:

“And he’s her father.””

Silence.

Then footsteps.

A door closing.

The sound changed.

They were outside.

Then Emily spoke.

“I’m telling Daniel.””

Claire:

“You can’t.””

Emily:

“Watch me.””

Then a terrifying sound.

A struggle.

A scream.

The recording cut off.

Nobody spoke.

The investigator looked at Claire.

“What happened after that?””

Claire was crying.

“I told you.””

“You said she fell.””

Claire nodded.

“She did.””

The investigator stared at her.

“But the recording suggests an argument.””

“It was an argument.””

“And then?””

Claire looked down.

“I don’t remember.””

Nobody believed that.

Nobody.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

I opened it.

Your wife didn’t push me. But she knows who did.

I looked up.

The investigator saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then looked at Claire.

“Who else was there that night?””

Claire shook her head.

“No one.””

The investigator stared.

“Think carefully.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My mother.””

I felt sick.

“Your mother was there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Claire didn’t answer.

The investigator leaned forward.

“Mrs. Carter.””

Claire looked broken.

“Because my mother told me to stay quiet.””

The room exploded into questions.

But I only heard one thing.

Another secret.

Another person.

Another lie.

I stepped away.

I couldn’t breathe.

My entire marriage had been built on things I never knew.

Then Maya called my name.

“Daddy.””

I turned.

She was crying.

“Can I tell you something?””

I walked back immediately.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Emily didn’t fall.””

I froze.

“Maya…”

“I saw.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you see?””

She grabbed my hand.

May you like

“Grandma pushed her.””

The room went silent.
