Chapter 12: The Person Who Controlled Everything
I couldn’t move.
Emily looked different.
Not like a ghost.
Not like someone who had returned from the dead.
Like someone who had spent a year running.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face thinner.
Her eyes tired.
But she was alive.
“Daniel.””
My voice barely worked.
“How?””
She looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“I’ll explain everything.””
The person behind her stepped forward.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew him too.
My mother’s closest friend.
The man who had attended every family gathering.
The man who had held Maya as a baby.
Richard.
“What are you doing?””
His grip tightened.
Emily looked calm.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
I stared at Richard.
“Why is he here?””
Emily answered.
“Because he helped your mother.””
The weapon moved slightly.
“Don’t make this harder.””
My anger exploded.
“You’ve been hiding for a year.””
Richard smiled.
“You really think this was about hiding?””
“Then what was it about?””
Emily looked at me.
“Survival.””
I looked at Claire.
“Did you know Richard was involved?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Richard laughed.
“Claire never understood the full picture.””
“Shut up.””
Everyone froze.
The voice came from Emily.
She looked at Richard with pure hatred.
“You destroyed everything.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You’re alive because of me.””
“No.””
Emily stepped forward.
“I’m alive despite you.””
The tension filled the room.
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Emily took a breath.
“Your mother-in-law didn’t plan everything alone.””
I waited.
“Richard helped her.””
“Why?””
Emily looked at Claire.
“Because they both wanted control.””
Richard smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Understand what?””
He stepped forward.
“Your family was falling apart long before I entered.””
“What are you talking about?””
“Your father was hiding things.””
I felt sick.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Like what?””
Richard looked at Claire.
“Ask your wife.””
Claire went pale.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“She knows.””
I turned to Claire.
“What does he mean?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Richard laughed.
“You’re still lying.””
Claire’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She looked like she was about to say something impossible.
Then Emily interrupted.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard turned.
“Why?””
“Because you’re the reason Maya was almost hurt.””
Silence.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You should have stayed gone.””
Emily stepped closer.
“And you should have gone to prison.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at Emily.
“What did he do?””
She stared at Richard.
“He was the one who took the photos.””
My blood froze.
“The photos in the envelope?””
Emily nodded.
“He was watching Maya.””
I felt rage move through me.
“Why?””
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Because he was collecting evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She looked at Claire.
“Of your family breaking.””
Then she looked at me.
“He wanted custody.””
The room went silent.
Richard smiled.
“Daniel, you have no idea what’s been happening.””
I stared.
“You tried to take my daughter?””
“No.””
He tilted his head.
“I tried to save her.””
Nobody moved.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered without thinking.
A familiar voice spoke.
This time, it wasn’t Emily.
It wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t anyone in the room.
It was Maya.
“Daddy…”
My heart stopped.
“How did you get this phone?””
Her voice trembled.
“Daddy, you need to come back.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Grandma is here.””
I looked at Claire.
She went completely pale.
Because we both knew one thing.
Maya’s grandmother had not been found.
And if she was back…
May you like
She had come back for one reason.
To finish what she started.
