Chapter 7: The Voice From The Dead
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
My hand tightened around the phone.
The hospital hallway blurred around me.
The sounds disappeared.
The nurses walking past.
The machines beeping.
The voices in the distance.
Everything faded.
Because there was only one thing my mind could process.
Emily.
My wife’s sister.
The woman everyone believed had died one year ago.
Was on the phone.
“Daniel?””
Her voice came again.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably real.
I looked at Claire.
She was staring at me.
She knew.
The moment she saw my face, she knew exactly who was calling.
Her lips parted.
“No…”
The word barely escaped.
I turned away from her.
“Who is this?””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“I know this is impossible.””
My heart pounded.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Emily, if this is some kind of joke—”
“It’s not.””
The fear in her voice stopped me.
“I tried to come back.””
My fingers went cold.
“Come back from where?””
Silence.
Then:
“From hiding.””
I looked at Claire again.
She had gone completely pale.
“Why did you call me?””
A pause.
“Because Maya finally told you.””
I froze.
“How do you know about Maya?””
“Because I was there.””
My stomach twisted.
“Where?””
“The night everything happened.””
I stepped away from Claire.
“Emily, you’re going to tell me exactly what happened.””
“I will.””
Her voice cracked.
“But not on the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because if Claire knows I’m alive, she’ll run.””
I looked at my wife.
“She’s right here.””
The silence on the other end was immediate.
Then Emily whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“Don’t let her near Maya.””
My chest tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re saying.””
“I understand more than anyone.””
“No. You disappeared for a year.””
“I was forced to.””
“By who?””
Emily didn’t answer.
That was worse.
“Emily.””
“She has been looking for me.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Claire.””
I looked at my wife.
She was crying silently.
Not denying it.
Not asking who I was talking to.
Just standing there.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
I lowered my voice.
“Tell me where you are.””
“I’ll send you an address.””
“Why should I trust you?””
“Because Maya is alive because I kept a promise.””
“What promise?””
“To protect her.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at the screen.
My hands were shaking.
Behind me, Claire spoke.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t turn around.
“Did you know she was alive?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
But I couldn’t tell if I believed her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
“I know how it looks.””
I turned.
“How it looks?””
My voice rose.
“You hid a sister from me. You hid her death. You hid a recording. You put evidence in our daughter’s backpack and somehow expected me to understand?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
“From what?””
She looked at me.
“From the truth.””
I stared.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Her eyes filled.
Maybe she knew I was right.
Maybe she didn’t.
I didn’t care anymore.
I went back into Maya’s room.
She was awake.
The second she saw my face, she knew something happened.
“Daddy?””
I sat beside her.
“Hey.””
“Are you mad?””
The question broke me.
“No.””
“Are you leaving?””
I immediately shook my head.
“Never.””
She looked relieved.
Then she whispered:
“Did you hear her?””
I froze.
“Hear who?””
She looked at the door.
“Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“Maya…”
“She called you?””
I stared at my daughter.
“How did you know?””
She swallowed.
“Because she called me too.””
The room became silent.
“When?””
“Before we came to the hospital.””
My breathing changed.
“What did she say?””
Maya looked scared.
“She said she was sorry.””
“For what?””
“For leaving me.””
I held her hand.
“Maya, who is Emily?””
She looked at me like I should already know.
“Mommy’s sister.””
“And you knew she was alive?””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
“Then how did she call you?””
Maya looked down.
“She didn’t call.””
“Then how?””
“She left a message.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
Maya pointed weakly toward the backpack.
“Inside.””
I grabbed the bag.
The police had taken the envelope.
But the backpack remained.
I searched every pocket.
Nothing.
Then Maya whispered:
“Behind the rabbit.””
I picked up the stuffed animal.
Inside the torn seam was a tiny memory card.
I stared at it.
Someone had hidden a secret inside my daughter’s toy.
And somehow, Claire had never found it.
I looked at Maya.
“What’s on this?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Everything.””
