Chapter 7: The Family Secret That Was Buried For Years

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

The name my father said stayed in the air like something too heavy to disappear.

“Karen?””

My voice came out almost as a whisper.

My father didn’t answer immediately.

He just stared at the evidence on the table.

The payment.

The messages.

The connection between people I thought I could trust.

“No,” I said.

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

I wanted him to tell me I misunderstood.

I wanted him to say there was another explanation.

Because as much as Mia had hurt me, as much as Karen had disappointed me, a part of me still believed there had to be a limit.

There had to be something she wouldn’t do.

My father looked at me.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

“What are you saying?””

He picked up the phone and showed me the transaction again.

The account belonged to someone connected to Karen.

Not directly.

But close enough.

Close enough that it wasn’t a coincidence.

“She didn’t send the money herself,” my father said.

“She used someone else.””

I felt sick.

“So she paid someone to ruin my reputation?””

“I don’t know everything yet.””

“But you think she did.””

He looked away.

And that was answer enough.

I stood up from the table.

“I need to talk to her.””

My father immediately shook his head.

“Not alone.””

“Why?””

“Because if this is true, she has already shown she’s willing to manipulate people.””

I hated that he was right.

But I also hated that I was starting to question everything.

Every family dinner.

Every conversation.

Every time Karen smiled and told me she was proud of me.

Had any of it been real?

That night, we waited.

When Karen came home, she immediately knew something was wrong.

She stopped in the doorway.

My father was sitting in the living room.

I was beside him.

The silence said everything.

“What happened?””

My father held up the phone.

“Explain this.””

Karen looked at the screen.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she laughed.

A small laugh.

Almost like she couldn’t believe we were questioning her.

“You’re serious?””

My father’s face remained cold.

“Very.””

Karen put her purse down.

“You think I paid someone to attack your daughter?””

The way she said “your daughter” hurt.

Not “our daughter.””

Not “my stepdaughter.””

Your daughter.

Like I had never truly belonged.

“I didn’t say that,” my father replied.

“But you’re thinking it.””

She looked at me.

“And you believe him?””

I stared at her.

“I want to know the truth.””

Something flashed in her eyes.

Anger.

Not sadness.

Not hurt.

Anger.

“You know what your problem is?””

I froze.

“What?””

“You think everyone is against you.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

After everything.

After the dress.

After the rumors.

After the messages.

She was blaming me.

My father stood up.

“Enough.””

“No,” Karen said.

Her voice grew louder.

“I’m tired of this.””

She pointed toward me.

“Do you know how hard it has been living in this house?””

I stared at her.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“Everything.””

She took a deep breath.

“You came here and suddenly everything changed.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

“You were the perfect daughter. The perfect student. The one everyone praised.””

I looked at my father.

Then back at her.

“So this was because you were jealous too?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

My father noticed.

“You knew.””

Karen became quiet.

“What?””

“You knew Mia was jealous.””

She looked away.

“You knew she was struggling.””

“Yes.””

“And you let it happen.””

Karen crossed her arms.

“I thought it would teach her something.””

My stomach dropped.

“You thought destroying my graduation dress was a lesson?””

“No.””

She sighed.

“I thought Mia needed to stop feeling invisible.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“So you sacrificed me?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

My father looked devastated.

“You protected her.””

Karen’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

“No,” he said.

“You were protecting your daughter by hurting mine.””

The room went silent.

For the first time, Karen looked like she understood how far she had gone.

But then she said something that changed everything.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Karen looked at me.

Then at him.

And slowly said:

“There’s a reason Mia hates feeling second.””

I felt a chill.

“What reason?””

Karen sat down.

Her confidence disappeared.

“Because she thinks you replaced her mother.””

Nobody spoke.

The words hit harder than expected.

My father’s face changed.

“Karen…”

“She grew up believing she lost everything when we got together.””

“That’s not true.””

“I know.””

Karen looked down.

“But she doesn’t.””

I didn’t know what to feel.

For the first time, I saw something beyond Mia’s cruelty.

Pain.

But pain didn’t excuse what she did.

Karen continued.

“And when she saw you succeeding…”

She paused.

“She saw someone who had everything she thought she lost.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly the family story I knew felt incomplete.

Everyone had been carrying something.

Everyone had been hurt.

But instead of healing, they had allowed that pain to become a weapon.

My father took a deep breath.

“Then why did you help her?””

Karen didn’t answer.

And that silence told me there was still another secret.

A bigger one.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I was afraid you would leave us.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

Karen looked at him.

“If Mia failed. If she made mistakes. If she lost everything… I thought you would choose your daughter and abandon us.””

The room became completely silent.

And I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t just about a dress.

It had never been about a dress.

It was about years of insecurity, fear, and resentment.

But there was still one question.

Who paid that girl?

And why?

Because Karen’s fear explained her actions.

May you like

But it didn’t explain the money.

Someone else was still hiding.
