Chapter 15: The Secret My Father Tried To Protect Me From

The name on the document changed everything.

I read it again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

“This isn’t possible.””

My father sat down slowly.

He looked older than he had that morning.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

I held up the paper.

“Why is her name here?””

Nobody spoke.

Rachel, Karen, Mia.

Everyone was silent.

Like they were afraid of the answer.

“Dad.””

Finally, he looked at me.

“Because before your mother died…”

He stopped.

I felt my chest tighten.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

He looked at the document.

“That Daniel was trying to take control of the trust.””

I frowned.

“But my mother…”

My voice became quiet.

“She’s not here.””

“I know.””

His eyes filled with sadness.

“She tried to stop him.””

The room felt colder.

“What happened?””

My father looked away.

“She found out Daniel had been manipulating financial records.””

My stomach dropped.

“Are you saying he was stealing?””

“Yes.””

“And my mother knew?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the document again.

Suddenly everything connected.

The trust.

The money.

Daniel’s obsession.

This wasn’t new.

It had started years ago.

Before me.

Before Mia.

Before Karen.

Daniel had been fighting this battle for a long time.

My father continued.

“Your mother wanted to expose him.””

“What happened?””

He became quiet.

“She never got the chance.””

The words hung there.

I didn’t want to ask the next question.

But I had to.

“Are you saying…”

My father looked at me.

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“No, Daniel didn’t cause her death.””

I exhaled.

But then he added:

“But he knew she was investigating.””

That was almost worse.

Because it meant he had been close.

He had known.

He had watched.

And he had continued living like nothing happened.

I looked at the documents.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Normal?””

I pointed around the room.

“Does this look normal?””

He didn’t defend himself.

Because he knew.

“I was wrong.””

That surprised me.

“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from pain.””

He looked at me.

“But I forgot that secrets create their own pain.””

Those words were true.

Everyone in this family had been trying to protect someone.

And everyone had ended up hurting someone else.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

Daniel.

“I was wondering when you would find the files.””

My entire body went cold.

“You knew?””

A small laugh.

“Of course.””

My father stood up.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Daniel continued.

“You always were curious.””

“What do you want?””

My father’s voice was controlled.

Daniel ignored him.

“I want you to understand something.””

“What?””

“You think I’m the villain because I exposed your secrets.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You manipulated everyone.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became calm.

“I revealed what was already broken.””

I wanted to scream.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

He paused.

“Your family was already full of lies.””

The words hurt because part of them were true.

But truth used as a weapon was still a weapon.

“What happens now?”” my father asked.

Daniel laughed softly.

“Now you choose.””

“Choose what?””

“You can protect your daughter.””

A pause.

“Or protect everything you built.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel continued.

“You have forty-eight hours.””

“For what?””

“To decide whether the trust belongs to her…”

Another pause.

“Or whether you want your family’s secrets to become public.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

He looked terrified.

Not for himself.

For me.

And that was when I realized.

Daniel wasn’t trying to destroy us anymore.

He was forcing my father to make a choice.

A choice no parent should ever have to make.

May you like

Between the child he loved…

And the life he spent years building.
