Chapter 13: The Enemy Who Was Already Inside Our Home
The picture on my phone changed everything.
Before that moment, Daniel felt like a person from a story.
Someone dangerous.
Someone manipulative.
Someone who had caused problems from a distance.
But seeing him standing outside our house made him real.
He wasn’t just a name from my father’s past.
He was someone watching us.
Someone waiting.
My father immediately stood up.
“Everyone stay inside.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Alert.
The kind of voice someone used when they finally understood the danger.
Karen looked terrified.
“Daniel was here?””
My father didn’t answer.
He was already checking the windows.
The doors.
The outside cameras.
“Mia, go upstairs.””
For once, Mia didn’t argue.
She grabbed Karen’s hand and followed her.
I stayed where I was.
My father noticed.
“I said everyone.””
“I’m not a child.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then stop treating me like one.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I was exhausted.
Everyone kept protecting me by hiding things from me.
And every secret made everything worse.
My father looked hurt.
“I’m trying to keep you safe.””
“I know.””
I lowered my voice.
“But I need to know what’s happening.””
He stared at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.””
That was something my father did differently from everyone else.
When he was wrong, he admitted it.
He walked back to the table.
“Daniel has always been good at finding people’s weaknesses.””
I sat down.
“What does he want now?””
My father looked at the picture again.
“I don’t know.””
Karen came back downstairs.
“Mia is scared.””
My father looked at her.
“She should be.””
Karen looked hurt.
“She’s still your daughter.””
“And so is she.””
He pointed toward me.
The room went quiet.
For years, everyone had acted like there was a competition.
Like love was something that could run out.
Like if one person received more, someone else had to lose.
Daniel understood that fear.
And he used it.
A few minutes later, our security company called.
The outside camera had been accessed.
Not broken.
Accessed.
Someone had used a code.
My father’s face changed.
“Who has access?””
The security employee gave him a list.
I watched him read the names.
Then stop.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He looked up.
“There are only four people with this access.””
“Who?””
He looked at Karen.
“Mia.””
Karen looked shocked.
“Me?””
“And Daniel.””
My stomach dropped.
“How would Daniel have access?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was only one possibility.
Someone gave it to him.
My father looked at Karen.
Her face turned pale.
“I didn’t.””
“I didn’t say you did.””
“But you thought it.””
He didn’t deny it.
Karen looked devastated.
“I made mistakes.””
“Yes.””
His voice softened.
“But I need the truth.””
Karen nodded.
“I swear I never gave him anything.””
Then Mia came downstairs.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I gave him something.””
My father froze.
“Mia.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know what he was doing.””
I stood up.
“What did you give him?””
“My password.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because he said he could help me.””
My father closed his eyes.
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
My heart sank.
The timing.
The dress.
The rumors.
Everything.
“He was talking to you before graduation?””
Mia nodded.
“I thought he understood me.””
My father looked heartbroken.
“He used you.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“You don’t understand.””
Mia looked at him.
“People like Daniel don’t help because they care.””
She wiped her tears.
“They help because they are waiting for something in return.””
I looked at Mia.
For the first time, I didn’t see my enemy.
I saw someone who had been manipulated.
Someone who wanted attention so badly that she trusted the wrong person.
That didn’t erase what she did.
But it explained it.
“What did he ask you to do?”” I asked.
Mia looked at me.
“At first?””
She hesitated.
“Just talk.””
“Talk about what?””
“You.””
The answer hurt.
“He wanted to know what you were doing.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“What else?””
Mia looked down.
“He asked about your graduation.””
I felt cold.
“He planned everything.””
Mia nodded.
“He told me if people saw you fail, they would stop thinking you were perfect.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Perfect.””
That word again.
Everyone kept fighting an imaginary version of me.
A version that never struggled.
Never cried.
Never failed.
But I was human.
I always had been.
My father looked toward the door.
“We need to find Daniel.””
“No,” Karen said.
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You don’t know what he wants.””
My father frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Karen looked afraid.
“I think I know why he came back.””
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because of the trust.””
My father became still.
“What about it?””
Karen looked at me.
“He believes if you lose control of it…”
She paused.
“He can get access.””
I felt a chill.
“So this was never about embarrassing me.””
“No.””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“It was about removing me.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Daniel doesn’t want you to fail.””
He looked at the picture.
“He wants me to lose everything.””
The realization was terrifying.
Because Daniel hadn’t attacked randomly.
Every move had a purpose.
Destroy my reputation.
Create family conflict.
Break trust.
Make everyone turn against each other.
And then step in.
I looked at the picture one more time.
Daniel wasn’t just watching.
He was waiting.
May you like
And the worst part?
He knew exactly where to hurt us.
