Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Plan
Those words followed me all day.
Because suddenly, everything changed.
This wasn’t just about Mia anymore.
Someone else had been involved.
Someone who had gotten close to me.
Someone who smiled at me while secretly helping destroy something important.
I couldn’t understand it.
What could my father possibly have that someone wanted?
Money?
A favor?
A connection?
I waited until my father came home that evening.
I didn’t tell him immediately.
I wanted to understand first.
But secrets had already caused enough damage in our family.
So I showed him the messages.
He read them carefully.
Then he became very quiet.
Too quiet.
“Dad?””
He placed the phone down.
“Who is this person?””
I told him.
His expression changed.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
He looked away.
And that scared me.
Because my father knew something.
“What is it?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“There’s something I need to tell you.””
I sat down.
“About her?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“About your scholarship.””
I froze.
“My scholarship?””
He nodded.
“Remember when you applied?””
“Yes.””
“You thought the recommendation letter came from your teacher.””
“It did.””
“Part of it did.””
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
My father sighed.
“There was another recommendation submitted.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
“Me.””
I stared at him.
“You wrote one?””
“I helped explain your situation. Your work ethic. Everything you had accomplished.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t want you to think I got it for you.””
My eyes filled slightly.
“You didn’t.””
“I know.””
He smiled sadly.
“That’s why I kept quiet.””
Then he looked at the phone again.
“And now I think someone else found out.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“So she helped Mia because she thought…”
“She thought ruining your reputation would make you lose opportunities.””
I couldn’t believe it.
All this time, the person pretending to be my friend wasn’t just jealous.
She was trying to gain something.
My father stood up.
“We need to be careful.””
“What are we going to do?””
He looked toward the window.
“We find out what she was promised.””
The next morning, everything exploded.
A rumor spread at school.
A rumor saying I had cheated my way into my scholarship.
People were sharing posts.
Whispering in hallways.
Looking at me differently.
My stomach dropped.
This was exactly what they wanted.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated me.
For years, I had been the quiet person.
The person who avoided conflict.
The person who let people talk.
Not anymore.
I had lost my dress.
I had lost trust.
I had lost the belief that being kind meant people would always be kind back.
But I had not lost myself.
That afternoon, my father and I sat together collecting everything.
Messages.
Screenshots.
Dates.
Evidence.
And then we found something.
A payment.
A transfer.
From someone connected to my family.
To the girl who helped Mia.
I stared at the screen.
“Who sent that?””
My father’s face became serious.
Because the answer was worse than we imagined.
“It wasn’t Mia.””
“Then who?””
He looked at me.
And slowly said a name.
A name that made my entire world turn upside down.

Because the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning…
Was someone inside our own family.
