Chapter 10: The Name That Broke My Father’s Trust

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire room felt like it was waiting for one word.

One name.

My father stood near the table, holding the documents that had already changed the way he looked at Karen.

But now there was something else.

Someone else.

“Who?”” he asked again.

Karen looked down.

Her hands were shaking.

“I don’t want to say.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“After everything that happened, you still want to protect someone?””

Karen closed her eyes.

“I’m not protecting them.””

“Then what are you doing?””

She looked exhausted.

“I’m afraid.””

That answer surprised me.

Because Karen had always seemed like someone who could control any situation.

She was the person who always had an explanation.

The person who always knew what to say.

Seeing her scared was different.

“What are you afraid of?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I didn’t see the woman who had defended Mia.

I saw someone who had been trapped by her own choices.

“I’m afraid that if I tell you, everything will fall apart.””

My father laughed quietly.

“Everything already fell apart.””

The truth hurt because it was true.

Our family had been breaking for a long time.

We just refused to admit it.

Karen slowly sat down.

“The person who helped me…”

She stopped.

Then whispered:

“Your uncle Daniel.””

My father froze.

The silence after that name was unlike anything before.

I looked at him.

“Who is Daniel?””

My father didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because I had never seen him react that way.

Not when he saw my destroyed dress.

Not when he learned about the rumors.

Not even when he discovered the money.

“Dad?””

He finally spoke.

“My brother.””

I felt confused.

“You have a brother?””

My father looked away.

“We haven’t spoken in years.””

Karen nodded.

“He found me when I was struggling.””

My father’s face became cold.

“He found you?””

Karen looked at him.

“Yes.””

“And he convinced you to take money?””

“He said he was helping.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

The certainty in his voice made everyone look at him.

“No?””

“He doesn’t help people.””

Nobody spoke.

My father walked toward the window.

“He makes people dependent on him.””

I didn’t understand.

“What happened between you two?””

My father was quiet for a long time.

Then he finally answered.

“Daniel always believed life owed him something.””

He turned around.

“When we were younger, he blamed everyone else for his problems.””

Karen looked down.

“He told me you abandoned him.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Of course he did.””

“Is that not true?””

My father looked hurt.

“He made a mistake. A serious one. I tried to help him.””

“But?””

“He refused.””

The room became heavier.

“He wanted shortcuts. He wanted someone else to fix everything.””

I looked at the documents.

“So he used Karen?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Karen started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

My father looked at her.

“I believe you didn’t.””

That surprised me.

After everything, he still believed her.

“But you should have told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

The honesty in her voice was painful.

“I thought I could solve it before anyone knew.””

“And when you couldn’t?””

Karen looked away.

“You became desperate.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Desperation had turned into fear.

Fear had turned into manipulation.

And manipulation had destroyed people.

But there was still one question.

“Why did he want me to fail?””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“Why would Daniel care about my graduation? My scholarship? My reputation?””

My father’s expression changed.

And I knew.

There was another piece.

Something he didn’t want to say.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“Daniel knew about your scholarship.””

“How?””

“Because he was looking into our family finances.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

My father looked at the papers.

Then at me.

“Your scholarship wasn’t just about school.””

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

“Your grandfather left a trust.””

I stared.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

Nobody had ever told me that.

My father continued.

“It was created for education and future opportunities.””

I felt confused.

“Why am I hearing this now?””

“Because I didn’t want money to define your achievements.””

That answer hurt.

But I understood.

My father wanted me to believe I earned my success.

Because I did.

“Daniel found out about the trust,” my father said.

“And?””

“He believed you receiving support meant he deserved something too.””

I felt cold.

“So he wanted to ruin me?””

My father nodded.

“Not just you.””

He looked at Karen.

“He wanted control.””

The pieces started connecting.

The money.

The rumors.

The manipulation.

The girl from school.

Mia’s jealousy.

Karen’s fear.

Someone had been pulling strings from the shadows.

And suddenly, I understood something.

Mia was never the biggest threat.

She was just a person someone else used.

That evening, my father made a phone call.

Not an angry call.

A careful one.

I watched his face while he listened.

Then suddenly, his expression changed.

“What did he say?”” I asked after he hung up.

My father looked at me.

“Daniel wants to meet.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

My father picked up his coat.

“To explain himself.””

I didn’t know why.

But I had a feeling.

May you like

People who destroyed things rarely admitted it easily.

And Daniel had already destroyed enough.
